WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA: In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. In this garden, you can see intensive gardening methods, water collection systems and even bio gas production. So it’s not only a convenient place to stay. Thanks for allowing me to you use land to do some cold weather camping, I couldn’t find the camp ground initially but i contacted the owners and Mr Andy I believe his name was.. quickly found me and led me to the camp ground.. he showed me around and told me if I needed anything to let him know.. I picked a area tucked away in the woods.. it was dark and peaceful and plenty of fire wood was available for a awesome fire.. the only slight con is I was awoke out my sleep to some dogs barking I am assuming they were over the fence but they seemed pretty close.. all in all I will be back and I recommend this campground for primitive tent camping

What a great place to stay a day or more and enjoy the property. They grow green leaf veggies, herbs etc there and it is very well organized. The grounds keeper, Jen is delightful and a go getter. The house is surrounded by flowers, shrubs etc and is beautiful. Elect is limited to no more than 15 amps, the outlets are 20. There is some mild local road traffic but very reasonable noise and quiet at night. It is the best hipcamp we have stayed at. We thank Phanat for offering his property for a stay in New Iberia.

A wonderful spot to crash and visit the various attractions nearby. The Tabasco Factory etc was great! Traffic on the neighborhood road is not bad and the sound of the train, two time during the night was not very loud. The Farm and grounds keeper, Jen is delightful and very helpful. We loved staying at Phanats garden, it is a beautiful respite from a largely industrial area. It was so lovely to check out the gardens and so many plants and beautiful brick buildings. I would say this hipcamp makes more sense if u have an rv or trailer, tent camping was okay but it did rain and the grounds flooded (which Phanat warned us would happen so no fault to them). We felt very safe and would stay again albiet maybe during a dryer season.

Wow this wonderful place is not only charming but has so much to do around it. Ginny & Scotty are the most wonderful hosts. Ginny has all information for you when you arrive about restaurants, local pubs, 100 yr old store that was a gem. They have a very level spot with a picnic table, Tiki torches and a very nice porch to sit and enjoy getting to know each other. We cant wait to come back.

Our stay at De' Thibodeaux was great. The forest surrounding our camp felt private and secluded. The open grass fields between the campsites created an open air atmosphere. At night, you could hear a symphony of crickets and owls. The lighted bridge across the canal into the trail felt magical. My only drawback was that I brought too much gear. I was not prepared for the amount of walking it would take to get from the campsite, back to the vehicle. Otherwise, it was an amazing area.And a lot of culture and sites to be seen in surrounding areas.

This was a beautiful location and great introduction to Louisiana terrain for a family who had never been :) Our stay got cut short due to some environmental influences (some heavy rain and brown recluses within the tent). Would have loved to stay if we prepped better and didn't have a young child with. Only complaint, is parking is described on site, I would say its better stated as on property, as this is not a drive up to your site and unload kind of experience. If we would have known, we would have packed much lighter. Regardless, a beautiful spot, accommodating host, and lots of wildlife to be heard at night!

Awesome site! Very nice and easy access right off the road. We arrived late at night and were able to drive right in and hookup since the host had provided extension connections for all services. Very quiet location and very well maintained. Hosts were very kind and provided us with printed local information for the area as well as a small gift. Would definitely visit again the next time we are in the area!
