Papa’s Hawaiian Orchid Farm

2 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Pahoa, HI
We are a commercial orchid farm starting the homestead 8 years ago. Lava caused us to evacuate 2 years ago before it stopped a mile above the farm and Malama Market. We have a lava tube on the property you can explore. It’s so tall in some places, you can drive a school bus through. Good to bring headlamps if you're interested in this and just for walking around the farm when there is no moon! We are currently constructing a wood fired pizza oven in the place where our picnic tables and eating area are located.Pitch your tent or stay in one of our rooms or junglelows in the middle of our orchid nursery. We have outdoor kitchen, hot showers and flushing toilets. Located in the heart of Puna in the country but only 10 min walk to the village of Pahoa. This area has a lot to offer including tide pools, black sand beaches, warm spring and sauna caves.

The Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon is a Rebirthing Center offering preparation and support for the transformation of a lifetime! We offer daily classes such as Bikram Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and AcroYoga. We host monthly yoga residencies with daily connection rituals such as Mantra & Meditation, Empathy Exchange, ComeUnity Gardening, & excursions to the local hot springs, black sand beach, and Sunday morning ecstatic dance. We have yearly retreats on the Equinoxes & Solstices, which begin with a 30 day cleanse and culminate with a Gratitude Ceremony on the Summit of Mauna Kea. As a retreat space, we often host guests who are on cleanses and/or dieta, so it is of utmost priority to keep the energy on the land pure and clear. Therefore, there is no smoking of any kind, alcohol consumption, or taking of plant medicine while on site. The Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon is a also permaculture homestead featuring many hugelkulture garden beds growing staple foods like taro, pumpkin, cassava, sweet potato, and local greens. We have many young fruit trees in the ground and are blessed to have some mature trees currently producing banana, papaya, rollenia, & avocado. In addition to growing food, we are also raising many animals and two children! You will see the girls up early in the morning feeding the bunnies and guinea pigs or playing with our three temple cats. We are committed to living in harmony with the land, and as such we are mostly off-grid and catch our own water. We sort all of our trash meticulously for recycling. Currently plastic is NOT recycled on this island, so our Kuleana (responsibility) is to buy as little plastic as possible. We use only biodegradable and eco-friendly soaps, shampoo, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, etc. It’s a great experience in taking small actions to show our love to the ’āina (the land).

TreeHouse in canopy of trees

1 site · Lodging3 acres · Mountain View, HI
Learn more about this land:Aloha,I built the treehouse to be a very romantic hideaway for myself and my honey, and now that I'm renting it out, the couples and families who have stayed here, including many honeymooners have appreciated the romance of the setting and ambiance. (In fact, we had considered calling it KamaSutreehouse when setting up the website!.) It's not just romantic though it's really fun for the kids. The setting is so private, surrounded by such natural beauty that one cannot help but be inspired. My favorite romantic details are the fireplace and the bed perched high up in the loft where you're surrounded by windows looking out at the moon and stars at night and native trees, birds and cloud formations by day, the low ceilinged double futon bed approached by inside later ( which is mostly for kids) and also accessible by crawling under the Master Bed ( about 5 feet up). The Sky-Walk 90 feet out into the forest is the latest whimsical and fun additions. The location is great it's very private and quiet, hidden in the rainforest yet it's only 3 miles from Volcano Village and 5 miles from the park entrance. Some guests a never leave the Treehouse. The TreeHouse is at 2860 feet above sea level, plus 20 ft. for the TreeHouse, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is at a little over 4000 feet above seas level for the viewing of the glow from the vent at a mile distance, on the edge of the crater. For the most comprehensive information about the island and local area, I recommend the book, The Big Island Revealed. The main attraction locally, of course, is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the hiking thru lava fields, lava tubes and even across the floors of craters. Volcano Village is well known as a premier artist colony and is home to many scientists, as well. Hilo is 25 miles away and has many attractions, including a new, state of the art astronomy museum that shouldn't be missed. And of course the Island is surrounded by beautiful blue ocean and all the activities that go with that.

The Kikala Waterfall Lodge

5 sites · Lodging14 acres · Wainaku, HI
The Kikala Waterfall Lodge at the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve is a lodge nested in a botanical garden and farm dedicated to the preservation of the world's plant biodiversity. Situated on the southeast facing flanks of Mauna Kea overlooking Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast, the bioreserve benefits of a unique climate where the lowland rainforest climate zone (Koeppen climate Zone Af) overlaps with the oceanic temperate mountain zone of Mauna Kea (Koeppen Climate Zone Cfb). The result is a cool and wet climate zone that supports many of the world's endangered palms and conifers. The bioreserve features 14 acres of riverfront Cloud forest. The Kikala river runs through the middle of the bioreserve, so Kikala Waterfall Lodge guests on the bioreserve have private exclusive access to prime waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cloudforest bioreserve isn't just home to botanical wonders, Hawaiian native hawks and many other beautiful Hawaiian birds like to nest in the cloudforest. The lodge community center features a Zendo that can support a contemplative yoga and meditation practice. The Bioreserve features gardens with a Japanese Zen influence to encourage a contemplative retreat experience.
