The Milky Way Cabin

Disconnect and relax at our custom-built tiny house nestled against a grove of Aspen trees. This 100% solar-powered and self-sustaining cabin is situated on 2 acres at 9300 feet above sea level, accessible via a scenic 13-mile drive on dirt roads off Hwy 24 in Florissant, Colorado. Since we are 100% OFF GRID we do not have a well or septic system. Bring 4-5 (5) gallon jugs of water and dump them in the tank under the sink. It's very easy and is plenty water when used conservatively. This way you will have running water. The shower itself uses 1.75 gallons per minute. If you decide to use the shower, make it quick! NOTE: The cabin will be dry beginning October through May for the winter. You can still boil water in the kettle and put it in the sink for a hot water wash-up. Just no running water. There is a water filling station next to the Fire Station in Florissant. You can fill up your jugs of water there. Bring a short hose. Ace Hardware has them across the street if you forget. One dollar in quarters will get you 20 gallons. They are closed on weekends. There is another one in Divide. IMPORTANT: Do not allow the water level to fall below 1/4 tank. If the water gets too low it can cause an expensive repair. The tank holds 48 gallons. There is a composting toilet. It's very easy to use. We've made a quick video on how to use it. Visit our website at www.themilkywaycabin.com. Keep an eye on the urine container and it and empty as necessary. There are two lofts. One has a queen bed and the other has two twin mattresses made of foam that fold in to chairs. Bring sleeping bags if you plan on sleeping in the loft! The kitchen table is flat against the wall and folds down when needed. Turn and pull out the lever on top release the table. This place is brand new and we are still working things out. There is a stool under the stairs and the box in the corner was designed to be used as a seat/ottoman. Lay out a blanket on the brand new Huge deck and bring binoculars or use our telescope (available in the summer only and located in the shed) and stargaze! Lots of things to do including hiking, paddle boarding, fishing in the summer at 11 Mile Reservoir. Go snow shoeing, rent a Polaris in Woodland Park, and snow mobiling in Buena Vista. Eleven Mile Reservoir is just a few minutes away by car. Detailed arrival and departure instructions are on our website. You will receive a guest password upon booking on how to use the unique systems in the cabin. You must agree to read it thoroughly before your arrival. This is our family cabin, not an Airbnb. If you do not empty the urine bucket upon departure you will be charged a $150 cleaning fee. We have security cameras for when the place is vacant. With this site being around 3000 feet from the reservoir you will be able to enjoy all the amazing views and amenities the reservoir has to offer without the crowded camp grounds. You will need a park pass to access the reservoir but not to camp on the land. A 1/4 mile down the road is access to nation forest for going off road or get a parks pass and fish at one of the many amazing fisheries in the area like Eleven mile, Spinney and Eleven mile canyon. The south shore boat ramp is less than 4 miles away. This area does get windy so be careful setting up awnings and pop up tents or anything the wind likes to blow away. The site has a slight pitch but leveling out your camper should be relatively easy. No trees on the land to block your 360 degree mountain views.

Overview

Situated at the base of 14,115 foot tall Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, Colorado is a great basecamp for forays into the Rocky Mountains. From hiking, mountain biking, and boating in the summer to snowshoeing, ice climbing, and skating in the winter, outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do in Colorado Springs. Considering Colorado Springs is Colorado’s second largest city and it’s only about an hour and half from Denver, you’ll find everything you need in terms of amenities here. Camping options are limited to RV parks in town but you’ll find plenty of campgrounds in the surrounding mountains if you prefer to camp closer to nature.

Where to go

Pikes Peak

One of the most visited mountains in the world and the highest peak in the southern Front Range, the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak summit offers incredible views. There are numerous ways to reach the top—you can hike, cycle, or drive up. The fee-based Pikes Peak Highway was built in 1915 and winds 19 miles to the top offering views of lakes and mountains along the way. You can find both tent sites and RV sites in the nearby Pike and San Isabel national forests.

Garden of the Gods

Just outside the city of Colorado Springs, the Garden of the Gods is a wonderland of red rock towers that appear to jut straight out of the Earth. Hiking trails wind among the towering formations, with horseback riding, jeep tours, and bike rentals are offered in the park. Park entrance is free, and although there are no Garden of the Gods campgrounds, several RV parks with full hookups and free wifi can be found right outside the park.

Lost Creek Wilderness

Tucked into the foothills northwest of Colorado Springs in the Pike National Forest, the Lost Creek Wilderness Area is filled with interesting red rock formations, secluded fishing streams, and some of the best camping near Colorado Springs. The Devil’s Head area is popular for rock climbing and has a trail that leads to the Devil’s Head Fire Lookout, one of the few remaining active fire lookout towers in the area. Campers will find endless options for tent camping.

When to go

Summer is the busiest time in Colorado Springs. If you want to avoid the crowds, visit March through May or September and October. Anytime between May and October is good for hiking, mountain biking, and climbing. Wildflower season varies based on elevation, but early summer is typically good. Pikes Peak region fall colors often peak between September and October. The Pikes Peak Highway is open year-round but may close periodically due to snow.

Know before you go

Downtown Colorado Springs offers numerous outdoor recreation stores and plenty of places to rent gear if you need it.
Head to Old Colorado City, just west of downtown, for a taste of Colorado’s early Gold Rush days. Here you’ll find a unique mix of antique shops, sidewalk cafes, old candy shops, and fine dining restaurants.
If you don’t want to drive to the top of Pikes Peak by yourself, you can hop on a guided jeep or bus tour. Just be sure to reserve in advance; tours fill quickly in peak season.
To capture the best photographs of Garden of the Gods visit early in the morning or late afternoon for the most brilliant rock colors.
Nearby Cripple Creek, Manitou Springs, and Cheyenne Mountain State Park offer additional options for campers.
