Nestled next to the looming East Mountain you’ll find 20 spots up for grabs at Hueco Tanks Campground.

Sixteen of the sites come with water and electric hookups, while the other four sites only get water -- but you’ll be afforded an awesome view of the surrounding funky rock formations that Hueco Tanks is known for from anywhere within the campground. Each spot also comes with a picnic table, which, more importantly, is covered by a stone-and-wood shelter -- which means you’ll have a way to escape the blistering mid-day desert sun.

You will have a clear view of the beautiful Guadalupe Mountains from your site. There are many back roads to take and see the area. You may even see a Roadrunner and a Cayote around. In the area behind the ranch, you may see Deer, Antilope, and Cattle. We are just starting the RV Park so we do not have any hookups. We may be able to make some arrangements for electricity. Beautiful desert land with a view of Hueco Tanks State Park. This land is barely starting up so do not expect any glamping or 5 star facilities. There is electricity for RVs or window units for tents. There's also a porta potty. There is a little trash here and there but I am working on cleaning this place up. Be patient and enjoy it for what it is. All natural! Be safe, this is the desert and home to critters, spiders, horned frogs, lizards, ants, cayotes, and probably snakes although I haven't seen any. There is a little shed where you can cook, get some shade, or just relax. The mesquite trees are being worked on so they are not big enough to provide decent shade. Be safe, be smart and have water with you at all times. There is no water, and no showers. But I am working on it! This spot is perfect for those hip campers visiting Hueco Tanks and need a spot to park or rest. It's for hip campers that are used to primitive camping and also to the people in the city that want to get away for a night or two but not drive too far out. The sunsets and stargazing are amazing. Far from the city but close enough to a 10 min drive to a grocery store.

Learn more about this land:There’s some wildlife. Mostly small animals like rabbits, prairie dogs, turtles, lizards, field mice and kangaroo mice. Bigger animals such as deer antelope and the occasional cow are out here. Dangerous animals are rattlesnakes, coyotes and cougars. Be prepared. Nearest city is about 40 miles East called Dell City. You can get water there every Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 8am. Power and sewage you’ll have to take care of yourself.

Hueco Tanks is one of the most fun places I have ever hiked because its kind of like a giant playground to explore. Once you get on top of the rock formation the exploration and searching for petroglyphs is endless. But MAKE SURE you have a reservation, even just for day visiting as the number of people in the park is limited per day. And camping reservation doesnt equal park reservation. You need one for each.

Hiking

Because Hueco Tanks State Park is a protected natural area, only 70 people are allowed within the self-guided areas at once. This keeps the petroglyphs and pictographs in pristine condition, so you’re sure to see their beauty for years to come. Call ahead to reserve your spot to explore the park’s steep, rocky trails because the spots often fill up on the weekend. Guided tours are also available and give access to even more areas within Hueco Tanks.

Climbing

The world-class climbing at Hueco Tanks State Park is a true Texas gem. People come from all over to climb, both self-guided and on tours, in the unique historical areas within the park. Because Hueco Tanks is a protected site, there are only a limited amount of self-guided climbs allowed each day, so be sure to call ahead for a reservation. Guided climbing tours grant access to more areas within the park, as well.

Wildlife watching
