Sugarloaf has been described as a mecca for cyclists who love to climb and don’t like crowds. We like the Bald Mountain Loop.
Trout fishing in Sonoma Creek is best in late spring and early summer (the creek is not stocked). Fishing season varies each year--please consult current California Fish and Game regulations. Anglers over the age of 16 must have a valid California fishing license
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park has a variety of unique hikes, ranging from a casual hike, to a waterfall, to an actual “planet walk.” The non-profit Friends of Sugarloaf hosts guided hikes and events fairly often, you can check out their full calendar here. After a big rain, the “Canyon Trail Waterfall” can be seen in all of it’s glory. If that’s not your thing (not sure if anyone has ever said, “waterfalls are just not my thing”), then there are miles of trails, some decent fishing and a cool observatory. The “Planet Walk” is a scale model of the solar system that is designed to fit within the park. It allows you to “hike” through the entire system and shrinks it down so you can do this.
There’s also great horseback riding, if that’s what you’re into!
Boulders along the Sonoma Creek and higher up in the canyon provide for some excellent challenges ranging from VO to V6. Check out the routes here, courtesy of SummitOrPlummit.
Sugarloaf Ridge is a brilliant place to try and spot some California wildlife . Deer, gray foxes, bobcats and coyotes all roam this land.
