WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

Thanks for allowing me to you use land to do some cold weather camping, I couldn’t find the camp ground initially but i contacted the owners and Mr Andy I believe his name was.. quickly found me and led me to the camp ground.. he showed me around and told me if I needed anything to let him know.. I picked a area tucked away in the woods.. it was dark and peaceful and plenty of fire wood was available for a awesome fire.. the only slight con is I was awoke out my sleep to some dogs barking I am assuming they were over the fence but they seemed pretty close.. all in all I will be back and I recommend this campground for primitive tent camping

Great overnight stay... not too far off major highway.
They have a trail on the property that gave our 2 little Chihuahuas an added delight with all the various smells & a great way to stretch your legs.
Property was well manicured - grass was cut, sites were excellent & the wifi is an added touch.
Overall great stay & will definitely recommend to other travelers if in this area.

Wow this wonderful place is not only charming but has so much to do around it. Ginny & Scotty are the most wonderful hosts. Ginny has all information for you when you arrive about restaurants, local pubs, 100 yr old store that was a gem. They have a very level spot with a picnic table, Tiki torches and a very nice porch to sit and enjoy getting to know each other. We cant wait to come back.

Our stay at De' Thibodeaux was great. The forest surrounding our camp felt private and secluded. The open grass fields between the campsites created an open air atmosphere. At night, you could hear a symphony of crickets and owls. The lighted bridge across the canal into the trail felt magical. My only drawback was that I brought too much gear. I was not prepared for the amount of walking it would take to get from the campsite, back to the vehicle. Otherwise, it was an amazing area.And a lot of culture and sites to be seen in surrounding areas.

This was a beautiful location and great introduction to Louisiana terrain for a family who had never been :) Our stay got cut short due to some environmental influences (some heavy rain and brown recluses within the tent). Would have loved to stay if we prepped better and didn't have a young child with. Only complaint, is parking is described on site, I would say its better stated as on property, as this is not a drive up to your site and unload kind of experience. If we would have known, we would have packed much lighter. Regardless, a beautiful spot, accommodating host, and lots of wildlife to be heard at night!

Awesome site! Very nice and easy access right off the road. We arrived late at night and were able to drive right in and hookup since the host had provided extension connections for all services. Very quiet location and very well maintained. Hosts were very kind and provided us with printed local information for the area as well as a small gift. Would definitely visit again the next time we are in the area!

Everything was provided for, including a private ref and insights and tips about the area/vicinity. Its a great place to be outside of a big city and to see some of the water bodies in LA. Absolutely the sweetest hosts we have ever encountered. We ended up with car trouble just before we hit the campsite and they were so kind and helpful. Upon arrival we recieved a brochure highlighting local history and attractions complete with good recommendations and sites to see, and even a welcome gift. We decided to stay an extra night. Hosts are friendly and kind, site it well kept and peaceful, and the setting couldn’t be more lovely.

About
Access wild areas of a bayou in south-central Louisiana. There is a boat launch, a fishing pier, and a dock. Take advantage of the boat rental facilities if you didn't bring yours.
Fish for a trophy catch of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and red-ear sunfish. Cool, clear waters of the lake have yielded several record catches of these fish.
Hike or mountain bike up to 20 miles of trails. Some trails lead to a cypress swamp on the edge of the lake. An 8-mile paddling trail puts you up close and personal with a wide range of ecosystems.
Visit the Louisiana State Arboretum State Preservation Area for a real treat. View centuries-old magnolia, beech, oak, and ash trees. The site contains more than 150 native plant species in a wide range of ecosystems.
Reserve one of nearly 200 improved campsites. Fifteen deluxe cabins await you.
When to go
The best time to visit Chicot State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings heat and humidity, which can be intense, while winter may have cooler temperatures and fewer visitors.

There is plenty to do here! We stayed two nights tent camping and took advantage of the hiking and canoeing. The lake and hiking were beautiful! While we really enjoyed our time, the camping itself is not very private and came with a lot of road noise.
