A dog-friendly campsite on the Llŷn Peninsula with sea and mountain views

Bolmynydd Camping occupies a spot on the Llŷn Peninsula’s southern coast that’s sheltered by the Llanbedrog headland. Midway between Pwllheli and Abersoch, this serene location is understandably popular with campers and caravanners alike. The problem is that some nearby campsites pack in as many caravans as they can, then squeeze in a few tents as an afterthought. However at family-run Bolmynydd, things are different. Caravans are limited to seasonal pitches around the site edges – the rest is reserved for tents, campervans and motorhomes. Everyone has a spacious pitch and fantastic views encompassing the coast and the mountains of nearby Eryri (Snowdonia).

In the peak summer months Bolmynydd is often full but copes well due to its spacious feel and planted hedges, creating corners of privacy. It’s a fairly traditional site in many ways, with clearly marked pitches, electric hook up and a facilities block with flushing loos, hot showers, dishwashing sinks, and a laundry. But it’s also small enough to retain its family-run feel. Rhodri and Ruth, your hosts, do a grand job of maintaining the site, which is spread between two flat and peaceful fields. It's all their little touches that make Bolmynydd such an enjoyable place to stay. Things like lighting the paths in the dark, numerous water points (so you don't need to trek to the main block), free Wi-Fi, and a handy dog-walking area. They ask for no amplified music on site and don’t allow large groups of campers.

If you've come to this neck of northern Wales, the chances are you’re in pursuit of outdoor activities, typically wet ones. And there’s plenty of opportunity for those. The closest beach for a swim is a walkable half mile down the road. Then there’s sailing and watersports at Pwllheli and Abersoch, both within five miles. But the benefits of the location don’t end there. The Llŷn Peninsula Coastal Path passes close by and offers ramblers a route that’s as long or short as you want it and the ever-visible mountains of Eryri are only half an hour’s drive away.

Large spacious camping pitch suitable for either tents, campervans or small motorhomes. Every pitch has an EHU available. 5 Star Graded Facilities -Spacious pitches all separated with hedging suitable for tents, campervans and motorhomes, all with electric hookup -Warm underfloor heated toilet block with free hot showers -Family / Disabled room with baby changing facility -Fully fitted laundry room -Indoor washing up area -free wi-fi across the park -Well behaved dogs are welcome Bolmynydd is a small family run camping park located in the shelter of Llanbedrog headland, in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. With its 5 star grading from Visit Wales it is the ideal choice for a perfect relaxing camping holiday, with superb facilities and a friendly atmosphere. From the Park there are fantastic views of the coast and the mountains of Snowdonia. It is within easy walking distance to beaches, a well stocked shop, family pub and cosy bistro.

I’ve been to this site twice now. The pitches are nicely spaced with hedges between you and your neighbour with beautiful views of the sea from the site. I went by myself and the owner offered to help putting the tent up which was lovely. The amenity block is clean, it’s never that busy and the communal microwave was a bonus. I took two dogs and found the clip on the fence in front of the amenity block really really helpful as you can’t leave the dogs unattended in the tent. I’ll happily visit again, as it’s a friendly and small site, it feels safe, it’s kept so clean, no queues for the showers or toilets and the quiet times seem to be respected. The site is on top of a hill and you can access it via two single track roads. This made for a nice circular walk with the dogs, plus the beach is a ten minute walk away and a small local shop also 10 minutes walk. I also did a longer walk to Abersoch but in the car it’s very close.

Beautiful setting

Lovely medium size campsite with beautiful views of the Welsh countryside. Great toilet block but the best thing for us was the large enclosed dog walking field - perfect! Agree with the other reviews that the lane to the site is very narrow but we got the motorhome up and down fine - just have to be patient and use the passing areas. We were in pitch 20 so a bit noisy next to the playing field, but perfectly peaceful after 10pm. We would happily return.

Amazing site with good size pitches which were nice and flat. The facilities were brilliant. Having a kids play area with football goals was a win for our children!

Very well maintained camp site, lovely owners and fantastic for getting to the beaches. Football field with nets for the kids to play and the washing facilities are the best I’ve seen. Would definitely recommend going and would go again

Nearby attractions

Bolmynydd Camping Park is about half a mile away from Llanbedrog beach which is sandy, sheltered and popular with families. If you like walking, you can use the Wales Coast Path to head to Pwllheli, five miles to the north-east, or to Abersoch, less than three miles south-west. Otherwise, either of these popular spots and their beaches are a short drive away. Porth Neigwl (or Hells Mouth Beach) is just five miles away and great for surfing when there's a south-westerly wind. Off Axis and Abersoch Watersports are two of a few local options for board hire and/or lessons. Anywhere on the Llŷn Peninsula is within reach and the western edge of Snowdonnia National Park is less than 20 miles away.

Food and drink

The Glyn Y Weddw Arms, half a mile from site, is the closest pub and is family friendly with a classic pub menu with options for kids. Dogs are allowed on a covered patio. Down at the beach, there's the Llanbedrog Beach Bar which serves breakfasts and lunches. Abersoch (less than three miles away) has plenty of options for eating and drinking including Zinc Bar & Grill and Crust pizzeria. The closest supermarkets are in Pwllheli but there's a well-stocked local shop within waking distance.
