Go swimming in the Little Big Horn River, trail rides available at the campsite, visit the Little Big Horn Battlefield Museum, 50 miles from the Yellowtail Lake and fishing on Big Horn River. Summer events: Battle of Little Big Horn Re-enactment on the 3rd weekend in June, and Cow Fair on the 3rd weekend in August.Pitch your tent along the Little Big Horn River on Medicine Tail Coulee where the Battle of The Little Big Horn took place. Bathe in the river where General George Armstrong Custer and Sitting Bull bathed. Tell ghost stories around the campfire and make s'mores. Experience a rustic and authentic camping. 50 miles from the Yellowtail Lake and fishing on Big Horn River. What a cool place to stay - on the Little Bighorn River where thousands of indigenous peoples were encamped prior to Custer's attack. Just across the river is land where the battle was fought. Birdie was welcoming and very informative. Our second night we were treated to a small cattle drive (about 8) going straight through our campsite! You can't find that everywhere :) Keep in mind that this is active farm land, so watch your step! My only ding is the ground is not very flat - ruts all over the place, so driving and parking is a bit tricky.

A stream, some horses, and the sky

Tent

A couple of lovely places to pitch a tent by a flowing stream. Horses wandering around, quite placid and lovely. The night sky was gorgeous and the location is historic. But it’s a rather rustic site with no potable water, a quite full port-a-potty, and lots of horse manure everywhere. I grew up around horses but some might not love that.

The location is convenient and the view is beautiful. Definitely recommend stopping at the trading post by the battlefield for an Indian taco.

Camping at the Medicine Tail Coulee ford was a highlight if not the highlight of our Virginia-to-Oregon road trip. Amazing moon rise, unforgettable sunrise, the sound of the Little Bighorn in the background… we literally sat at the site all day and all night. It is absolutely unique. Grateful for the experience.
