Glamping on a charming smallholding beside the Llangollen Canal

Giving your family a taste of the good life is easy thanks to Little Ranch Glamping in the Cheshire countryside. Hosts Rod and Vics have created two family-sized, family-friendly boltholes so you can enjoy a stay on their 20-acre smallholding. It’s a lovely place with goats, sheep, chickens, ponies, and the Llangollen Canal running through it all. You are welcome, your kids are definitely welcome, and dogs are welcome too.

Accommodation is in a handcrafted shepherd’s hut or a cabin, which is a more-solid-than-it-sounds little annexe. Both have been lovingly put together with lots of reclaimed materials and plenty of taste to provide self-contained, en-suite places to stay that happily straddle the line between glamping and self-catering accommodation. The shepherd’s hut sleeps four, with two double beds stacked together in a bunk, while the more spacious cabin has two double bedrooms—plus an option to accommodate two more in a sofa bed in the living space. Both also have a shower and loo as well as a kitchenette. Outside, each has a space to eat alfresco and a fire pit for toasting marshmallows.

Lovely as the indoor spaces are, it is the outdoors that really makes this place. In addition to those evenings out under the stars, there are other things to do right here on site. The canal meanders through the paddocks and you’re welcome to launch a paddleboard or kayak into it. The canal towpath is also a lovely place for a walk. Vics runs an outdoor kids club, Little Ranchers, a few mornings a week, which younger kids are welcome to join (for an extra charge). There are walking and biking trails in the surrounding countryside and Nantwich is not far away. Within 20 miles, you’ll find enchanting family fun at BeWILDerwood, mountain biking at Delamere Forest, sailing at Manley Mere, and sightseeing in Chester. So, there’s plenty to do beyond the farm gates—if you can bear to leave the good life behind for an hour or two.

Shepherd's Hut
It was amazing! The shepherds hut was so cozy. We loved the wood burner inside as well as making a fire outside. We roasted marshmallows and this a ghost story 🙂 The kids would go out and play with the animals every morning before breakfast. The hut was provided with marshmallows, biscuits, bread, cacao powder for making hot chocolate, bread, marmalade, butter and more. We watched the stars at night and the sunrise in the morning. We took a walk along the canal and helped a boater close a water lock behind him. The place was decorated beautifully and we played boardgames before bed at the little table with the radio playing quietly in the background. The lack of internet really was a bonus! We loved the whole experience! Rod and Vics were incredible hosts and I thoroughly recommend a visit!

Little Ranch Experience
We absolutely loved our glamping experience at Little Ranch, I cannot recommend it enough. We all had such fun. My son was so happy to be able to help around the farm, meet the animals, and play with our hosts children and we got to take in the scenery and relax in a wonderful setting. We will be back for sure! Thanks again Little Ranch

Shepherd's Hut
The perfect winter getaway
We loved our time in the Shepards Hut, from the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by Vics & Rod. The accommodation is cosy yet more spacious than anticipated with lovely interiors throughout to give a real homely feeling. The location is stunning, surrounded by beautiful Cheshire countryside (and farm animals) with easy accessible walks from the hut. We will definitely be back in the future.

Nearby attractions

Little Ranch Glamping is in the Cheshire village of Stoneley Green, three miles outside Nantwich. You can kayak or paddleboard directly from site or head out on canalside or country walks from here. Follow the tow path on a long walk (about two miles) in one direction to reach the pretty village of Wrenbury or in the other for the medieval market town of Nantwich where there are shops, eateries and an outdoor pool. Little Ranchers outdoor kids club usually runs a few mornings a week on site – giving kids the opportunity to meet and feed the animals, to enjoy trailer rides and to take part in farm-based arts and crafts, at an extra charge. Off site, there’s more family fun close by at BeWILDerwood (six miles away), the forest-based theme park. It's also near to lovely gardens nearby at Cholmondeley Castle (the castle itself is not open to visitors). The Crocky Trail is another place for slightly off-the-wall family fun, 15 miles away, and there are mountain biking trails at Delamere Forest, 18 miles away. Chester and Chester Zoo are 20 miles from site as is Manley Mere where there’s sailing and watersports on offer.

Food and drink

The closest shops are in Nantwich, three miles away where there are a good selection of independent shops and supermarkets as well as lots of places to eat out. Try The Leopard Pub, which has a menu that mixes pub favourites with American-style burgers and hot dogs, or Deadwood Smokehouse which offers food from the barbecue. For a quintessentially English (and rather nice) pub with a menu, head in the other direction to The Cholmondeley Arms (six miles) or to The Yew Tree Inn in Bunbury. Both are dog friendly.
