Primitive Camping Retreat

Mawhe Acres Camping Retreat has two primitive camp sites just inside the tree line of an open field, each with a 16' x 16' crushed limestone pad for tents. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and access to a compost toilet (in outhouse). There is no potable water or electric. However, for a nominal fee, we can provide a water hose to the campsite. There's easy access with the ability to drive through the field to the campsite or guests can walk in with their gear from driveway. We're fine with car camping too - we just want to keep things as natural as possible. Mawhe Acres - a 25 acre farm, much of which is raw land and woods in their natural state, undeveloped and not farmed for decades - is an official National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site. NWF recognizes our commitment to sustainably providing the essentials of wildlife habitat - natural sources of food, water, cover and places to raise young. The abundant wildlife around includes deer, squirrels, red foxes, turkeys, chipmunks, groundhogs, raccoons, opossums, woodpeckers, owls, and birds of prey (mostly red-tailed hawks and vultures). We have a small lake with good fishing and acres of woods to explore. There are some footpaths for easier walking. We want to share our beautiful land for our guests to enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of the forest which can help you relax. Our seasonal bath house is generally open from April or May to October or November based on the prevailing temps. There are 4 flush toilets, 2 sinks, and 2 hot showers. The floors are concrete so we recommend shower shoes and you'll want to bring your own towels and shampoo/soap. The farm has a small playground, yard games, creeks, and a steep and rugged hiking trail that loops the mountain. We're also just 8 miles from the hiking trails at the Berea College Pinnacles, 8 miles to Owsley Fork Reservoir, 20 minutes to Anglin Falls, 12 miles to Berea, 35 minutes to Richmond, Ky, and a scenic hour to Red River Gorge. For other activities, restaurants, shopping, music, and more, we're happy to share our favorites, but highly recommend checking out the Berea Tourism website.

I find it peaceful here and can easily ignore it but I'm mentioning it so your not surprised by it ;) The Neighbor dog (Roxy) is very friendly and might visit you while you are here :) You are welcome to hang a hammock in a small section of woods, by a small pond, or even on my covered porch. You are welcome to pitch a tent anywhere you like. You are welcome to park an RV or vehicle in the drive. The drive is about 250ft long, you would need to back in in order to hook up to the 30 or 50 amp plug. RV's can use the 30 or 50 amp plug (30 amp will need an adapter. I have one you can use if you don't own one of your own) and hose for water. I have an outdoor shower and a camping toilet. I am ... - one hour from Lexington, Louisville, Elizabethtown, and Frankfort.- 1 mile from a mini mart with Gas, Ice, Pizza, Chicken Wings, Sandwiches, ect.- 6 miles from Dollar General and A pizza Restaurant - 15 ish miles from Wal-mart and other chain stores and restaurants I'm a great travel guide so feel free to tell me what your in town for or things you like to do. I will happily make you up a list of things to do and see and places to eat. Keenland, Churchill Downs, The Bourbon Tour (Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Heaven Hill, and many others) are within an hour of here. My place is secluded and peaceful. Its a wooded country setting and is a primitive site. There are no facilities or utilities, there is an outhouse/self composting (follow up your business with dropping leaves in after). It may not be suitable for children as there are active brush/wood burn piles on the land. See all photos and ask questions, please. I want it to be enjoyable for all who book. It’s also noteworthy that there are dogs in the area that roam free, it’s way out in the country, there are no leash laws. I’ve never had any issues with unfriendly dogs, but always be aware. It’s at a dead end road, no thru traffic. You can stay and enjoy some amazing stargazing, (there is minimal lighting and a very dark, clear view of the night sky) and lots of peace and quiet or explore the Daniel Boone National Forest surrounding the property or travel a short distance and see so many nearby amazing areas…Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge State Park, NADA Tunnel, Sky Bridge, Cave Run Lake, Twin Knobs and Zilpo Recreation Areas, Carter Caves State Park, Grayson Lake, Rudy’s Ranch. Plantasia Homestead at Anglin Falls

Our property, Plantasia, is thirty-five acres of hardwood forest, lined with limestone boulders and sandstone cliffs, the occasional old growth tree, and mineral springs pouring out pure delicious water. The rest of the property is an old Appalachian homestead, featuring organic gardens and orchards, two farm cats and one farm dog, bee hives, and a flock of domestic ducks. The stewards are Phil, Sacha, three year-old Aurora, and baby Arthur. We are particularly keen to welcoming other families and/or folks who live in relative sobriety. The springs feed into creeks which criss-cross the wildflower meadow, creating spaces to splash and explore with the minnows, crawdads, frogs, snakes, and whoever else you might find. To the interest of fossil hunters and rock hounds, the creeks are packed with geodes, agates, and relics of an age when Plantasia was the ocean floor (~250 million years ago). Down the road, the trailhead of one of Kentucky's greatest waterfalls, Anglin Falls, is within walking distance (though you can also drive there and park). Plantasia is also a short drive from Berea, the folk art capital of Kentucky, which features plenty of local shops and restaurants, as well as some beautiful trails on the outskirts of town (Brushy Fork for a relaxing stroll, or the Pinnacles for a big majestic hike).

Overview

Drive 1.5 hours east of Louisville to enjoy the farm country along the way to Lexington and its charming surrounds. Lexington offers a perfect base for a camping adventure—while the city’s parks and trails are worth a visit, it’s the wider Bluegrass region that draws campers with famous horse farms and equestrian culture. Between rides, hikes, and outdoor adventures, you can venture out to a plethora of nearby camping hot spots, including the Red River Gorge within the Daniel Boone National Forest and Natural Bridge State Resort Park, which showcases natural sandstone bridges as an ideal spot for camping amid the beauty of Kentucky's wilderness.

Where to go

Jacobson Park

Just 20 minutes from Lexington, the 216-acre Jacobson Park is a local favorite for outdoor fun including pedal boats, kayaking, lake fishing, and walking trails. A number of Hipcamps and other campgrounds dot the surrounding area nearby. Meanwhile, the famed Kentucky Horse Park also sits close to Lexington, 20 minutes’ drive away on the other side of the city outskirts.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park

A 90-minute drive southeast of Lexington, Natural Bridge State Resort Park is known for its natural sandstone bridge and winding hiking trails. Campers can hike to the arch, take in panoramic views, and go tent camping in the Natural Bridge campgrounds, most of which link up to the Red River Gorge.

Red River Gorge

This is Kentucky’s most famous outdoor destination, notable for hiking, incredible rock climbing, and camping. Head 1.5 hours southeast of Lexington to the Red River Gorge for camping within Daniel Boone National Forest, home to wild trails and epic overlooks created over time by the Wild and Scenic Red River. Horseback riding and rock climbing serve as the primary day-time activities for campers who sit back by the campfire come nightfall.

Cave Run Lake

Two-hundred miles of shoreline? Yes, please. With that much space, Cave Run Lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and camping within Daniel Boone National Forest. Visitors can get out on the water, hang on the sandy beaches, go fishing from one of two marinas, explore the surrounding forest, and set up camp for the night.

Mammoth Cave National Park

About 1.5 hours southwest of Lexington, the UNESCO-listed Mammoth Cave National Park makes up the world's longest cave system. Explore the cave, go hiking, and keep an eye out for wildlife at one of Kentucky’s most famous outdoor spots. Although you can’t camp inside the cave, the park’s designated campgrounds provide plenty of options for tent campers and RVers.

When to go

Lexington is a year-round destination that experiences a full four seasons. The peak summer can see high temperatures and humidity, while spring and fall are best for camping. Fall is especially nice for cool evenings and warm days with colorful foliage. Winter is surprisingly mild on most days as well—snow can accumulate on occasion, but for the most part, temperatures are cool but freezing.
