Pengraig Campsite

1 unit · Tent1 acre · Wales
After a secluded stay on Anglesey? Take a peek at peaceful Pengraig Campsite. Up at the isle’s most north-western point near Church Bay, it’s about as far as you can get from the mainland without actually ditching into the sea. With that far-flung setting comes a stunning sea view – one that can be gazed at for many hours from the comfort of your pitch (a recommended activity around sunset, with drink in one hand and a barbecue stoking implement in the other). See the sea from a different angle on the nearby Anglesey Coast Path or while strolling on the sands of one of the local beaches. The waves aren’t the only gazing material around here – turn your back on the coast for scenic views of Mynydd Y Garn, or bring binoculars for a bit of birdwatching. Once darkness falls, direct your gaze upwards; the lack of light pollution means the stars can often put on a glittering show here. This isn’t a place for folks seeking heaps of facilities and entertainment; the emphasis is very much on peace and nature. Low-key amenities include a drinking water supply, a chemical disposal point and a toilet block (with basins and proper flushing loos). If you want to venture out in search of eats, pub meals and seafood suppers are five minutes’ drive away in Church Bay, and a little supermarket 15 minutes away in Cemaes.

Coastal campsites near Ravenglass with campfires guide

Overview

A coastal village in Cumbria, Ravenglass serves as a gateway to incredible camping opportunities around Lake District National Park. Set at the estuary where the Esk, Mite, and Irt rivers converge, Ravenglass is a stone’s throw from outdoor adventures on the serene waters of Windermere and Wast Water, as well as the tranquil valleys of Eskdale and Buttermere. Visit for a couple of days with a stay at camping pitches or waterside glamping sites in Ravenglass, or head out into nature and camp in the wilderness. Cyclists flock to National Route 72, a coast-to-coast ride featuring the living history of Hadrian’s Wall, and avid hikers enjoy Cumbria Way, a long-distance walking path from Ulverston to Carlisle. With rugged coastlines and dramatic moorland, Ravenglass area camping promises to delight.

Where to go

Western Coast of Cumbria

The historic western coast of Cumbria, where Ravenglass stands, is a region that dates back to a time when ancient Romans guarded the area against barbarian invasion. Along with ruins of Roman baths and other historic landmarks, the area is dotted with camping sites along the beach and cliffs to inland valleys and fells. Coastal campsites can be found from St. Bees Head Heritage Coast, north of Ravenglass, and next to the pristine sands of Silecroft Beach, south of town. Enjoy waterfront views of the Irish Sea from caravan pitches along the coast, as well.

Eskdale

Just east of Ravenglass, the glacial valley of Eskdale is known for its rolling landscapes and dense woodlands. A beloved camping destination, Eskdale offers a quieter experience than the more central Lake District areas. Glamping pods and campsites with tent pitches offer easy access to popular hiking paths, including the route up to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. Then, explore River Esk and Wast Water, visit HardKnott Roman Fort, built in the 2nde century, and bask in the glory of Stanley Ghyll Waterfall, set in a deep gorge.

Buttermere

A Lake District adventure calls for lakeside camping retreats. Crummock Water and Loweswater, along with Buttermere itself, promise a tranquil escape into a beautiful valley with verdant meadows and dramatic fells. Many farms in the area offer glamping pods and luxury yurts, giving campers comfortable access to canoeing and kayaking on Buttermere Lake. Fly fishing for brown trout, especially in the early morning during summer, is also especially popular here. Or go river fishing on River Cocker for another immersive experience.

When to go

Camping around Ravenglass is most comfortable from late spring to early autumn. Lake District weather is most pleasant in summertime, due to warmer temperatures, drier conditions, and longer daylight hours for hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. Summer is the peak season for trout fishing on the lakes, too. For a quieter experience with fewer people, consider camping during the shoulder months. Campers should note that rain can be in the forecast year-round.
