Cedar Creek Forest Camping

11 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents97 acres · Tay, ON
Welcome to Cedar Creek Forest Camping! Voted second best campsite in Canada in 2021 and ranked number 2 in Ontario in 2022. I have 97 acres of very private camping. The forest is a bird watcher’s and nature lover’s paradise. I have developed miles of flat groomed trails and a 3-acre pond (plus several bush ponds). The sites are spread around the pond and are close but not right beside it. There is an abundant amount of wildlife to explore: birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and mammals call this home. There is a small swimming hole on the island but otherwise the pond is full of aquatic life. The sites and trails are maintained all year long and the forest is quiet and beautiful. I have planted over 3000 trees with the help of the Severn Sound Environmental Association. The forest is registered as a managed woodlot with the province and habitat preservation/restoration is the priority goal. Please DO NOT bring firewood for your visit. I have large bags of cured firewood that was sustainable harvested from the forest available. Invasive insects and disease can be transferred from imported wood. Guests are welcome to quietly explore the forest trails but are asked to stay on the trail. Many birds and animals nest in the forest. My campsite is family-friendly (and pet-friendly), and 420 friendly too. Guests can easily drive up to and park at all campsites. My camp site is tolerant and respectful of all humans, animals and things. The Yurtle structures were built from Hemlock trees that were cut from this forest and processed into boards, then engineered into unique camping huts. Large windows capture the glory of the surrounding forest and sun sets, while wood stoves warm campers on those cold days/nights. Guests are asked to remove excessive garbage and recycling when possible. Thanks for viewing and visiting, cheers and peace, Dave

RV camping near Gravenhurst with campfires guide

Overview

Known as the “Gateway to Cottage Country” due to its historic cottages and inns, Gravenhurst is celebrated for its history and its nature. Hike along trails in Jevins and Silver Lake Conservation Reserve to see native lizards and bogs. Or walk along the Hardy Lake Trail to see more of Ontario’s outcrops. Campers will also find the area rich with RV parks, campsites, and both rustic and luxury cabin rentals. Since it borders Lake Muskoka and Gull Lake—both great spots for swimming, boating, waterskiing, and fishing—waterfront camping is also available.

Where to go

Lake Muskoka

Surrounded by charming cottages and campsites, Lake Muskoka is known for coldwater swimming and steam-boat cruises. Dive into the lake for a swim or take out a canoe, kayak, or jet ski. Anglers can set up for fishing—the lake is home to trout, largemouth bass, and walleye. Walk along Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail around the lake. Winter campers can also snowboard and ski in designated areas like Gravenhurst Nordic. Nearby campgrounds and RV parks with electric and water hookups make it easy to access the lake (some are situated on the lake itself). Many feature equipment rentals and supply shops as well.

Jevins and Silver Lake Conservation Reserve

Jevins and Silver Lake Conservation Reserve brims with ponds, wetlands, and bogs as well as rare flora and fauna like the five-lined skink—the province’s only native lizard. It also features the Jevins and Silver Lake Trail that’s popular with hikers and backpackers who want to explore red oak and white pine forests. In winter, the trail is used for snowmobiling.

Hardy Lake Provincial Park and Trail

Hardy Lake Provincial Park is full of forested landscapes, lakes, and trails, like its popular three-mile Hardy Lake Loop Trail. It is moderately challenging with its descents and steep ascents, but the effort is worth it to see outcrops and sprawling lake views. Camping is not permitted in the park, but there are nearby campsites and RV parks that have amenities like electric and water hookups. Look for year-round cabin rentals near the park too.

When to go

Gravenhurst is great for camping year-round—though peak season runs from late spring through early fall. Spring temperatures in Gravenhurst range between 0–20°C. Many campers like to visit in September to attend local harvest festivals and enjoy warmer weather averaging around 18°C. Although campers will find a quieter woodland scene during winter, there’s still plenty to enjoy like skiing and snowmobiling. Winter temperatures range from -15–2°C.
