From Perdido Key, you can kayak to visit some of the 400 acres of bayou along this seashore administered by the National Park Service. (Keep an eye open for armadillos!)
A trip back in time is on deck for you at historic sites like Fort Pickens. Don't be surprised if you find you have the beach and dunes almost to yourself. You may come home with pristine seashells and sand dollars.
This national seashore along the Gulf of Mexico is divided into two sections: Florida and Mississipi. Camp in Mississippi at Davis Bayou Campground, where 52 campsites can accommodate either tents or RVs (including 40+ feet).
The Fort Pickens campground is south of Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island, 137 RV sites have water and electric hookups, and 41 tent sites are available.
The ideal time to visit Gulf Islands National Seashore is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the summer crowds have thinned. Summer offers warm waters perfect for swimming but can be quite hot. Winter is less crowded but may be too chilly for water activities.
