Noorla Farm (Happy Camping Ground)

4 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents30 acres · Mcharg Creek, SA
We live in a beautiful valley on 30 acres, that not many people know about. We're joined by 3 friendly dogs, 4 horses, 2 alpacas, 4 Galloway cows and chooks, along with the resident wildlife including many birds, kangaroos, koalas, shy owls, and even an echidna! All this, plus beautiful views from atop our hills, right to the lake, and the delightful winter creek complete with frogs. We are close to the McLaren Vale wine region as well as wineries throughout the Hills and 35 minutes to the coast of Victor Harbor. The Greenman Inn is 5 minutes down the road and has wonderful food from Wed to Sun if you do not feel the urge to cook with wood fires for the cold nights or a gorgeous outdoor area for the warmer months. At present, we offer two areas for camping. Topspot which has lovely views and is quite secluded amongst the tree tops. This site is suitable for tents and camper trailers (need reasonable backing skills and 4WD) The Laneway which is close to the babbling creek is suitable for those with a small caravan, or motorhome, 2WD etc, along with tent campers. (but would struggle with large caravans/motorhomes - please check with hosts) (The Lookout/Highview has spectacular views and is suitable for tents and camper trailers, accessible by low-range 4WD (or AWD if the weather is dry) - Please note this site is currently closed due to stock rotation.) If you have any doubts about which to book, please ask. AUTUMN/WINTER MONTHS: if we receive considerable rain the trek up to the hill sites could become slippery and not accessible as it is a farm paddock, therefore unfortunately your booking may need to be cancelled. NOTE: On our farm there is limited phone coverage in the valley (The Laneway) Topspot and The Lookout/Highview do have coverage. Pets are welcome, however, please ensure they are kept under control (unless discussed with the host) at all times as we have our livestock and are surrounded by neighboring livestock, as well as the wildlife that frequently visits. Please note: This is an active small farm, therefore work may need be continued throughout your stay possibly necessitating the use of machinery and tending to our livestock. If you wish to see some of the animals up close, please let us know and we will try to accommodate. We ask that all fires be contained within the fire pit provided and a portable toilet is available for your use. BUSHFIRE SEASON: Wood and open fires are not permitted in the bushfire season, therefore you will not be able to use the fire pits.

Cockatoo Valley Tiny Vacations

7 sites · RVs, Tents23 acres · Cockatoo Valley, SA
This 20 acre working property is dedicated to our horses, dogs, birds and relaxing! We have recently moved to 19D Cockatoo Valley so it's just the beginning. You are welcome to wander into the big paddock and get a close up view of the big Solar tracking system that services the property. It is also through this gate you go to access the walking trails and continue on to explore the scrub area where many native birds come and go including kookaburras. The line of trees planted in the gully area are dedicated koala forage trees so also wander down there and have a look and see if you can spot one. Your relaxed property walk will take you past paddocked sheep (they may run up to you if they think you have something for them to eat. Cut apples or carrots into pieces for them ) Rams and Whethers are together in their own paddock, alpacas Sebastion and Bobby are in with the Ewes and any lambs at the time protecting them from predators in another paddock. There are horses, Dallas the mule (please do not enter their paddocks) , wild ducks at the dam, as well as our ducks and geese if they are out of their enclosure that day. There are raceways between all paddocks to continue your walk all around the property. Beware of the electric fencing though, it hurts if you touch it! We also have some very friendly chooks and turkeys that LOVE to say hello and be hand fed. Small amount of bread or preferably small chopped up pieces of apple, carrot, grapes and especially watermelon! Feel free to give them any food scraps you might have. We also have a family of magpies will enjoy any meat scraps you leave for them too.Dallas, our mule is always up for a bit of attention and any apples or carrots you might like to share with him and is close to this site. Dallas is rather special as his dad is a "mammoth donkey" who has been imported from America. His mum is a stunning thoroughbred. Mammoth donkeys are a bigger/taller breed of donkey than Australian donkeys are. They are beginning to be used up north on stations instead of horses as mules are sturdier, more sure footed, not as flighty as horses so safer for stock men and women to use working with cattle. They can live into their late 30,s so have a longer working life as well. Dallas was born in 2023 Campsites 1, 2 and 3 are on the right hand side as you drive in via the automatic opening gate which you will be given access to once we have added your mobile number to the system after you have booked. We are currently planting more native shrubs and trees in this area to encourage even more bird life plus provide future windbreaks and further divide sites. From this area you will see the most spectacular sunsets and be able to have an open campfire during winter season. The Dam It site, Tree line site and Solar paddock site are through another gate on the left hand side opposite site 3/ the paddock with the solar panels in it ....before you reach our residence, aviaries and toilet. It is also through this gate you go to access the walking trails. Besides sitting back relaxing reading a book with a nice local wine in your hand there are other nearby options to fill your days while staying on our property. Take a short drive down Goldsfield Rd to the Mining Museum and hiking trails. A few KM's towards Williamstown stop in and see the Whispering Wall, built between 1899 and 1903, for its time of construction the dam was deemed a revolutionary engineering marvel. Sounds and voices, even a whisper can be clearly heard at the other end of the dam more then 100 meters away. Continue on through Williamstown and hire a kayak and explore the Warren Reservoir with the resident pelicans. The Warren reservoir was built on the South Para River between 1914 and 1916. Mt Crawford forest is then another short drive on where you can hike, ride and picnic and be guaranteed to see kangaroos in their natural habitat. We are also ideally located being at the gateway to numerous wineries, take your e-bike and explore the towns in the Barossa Valley which are linked with rose lined bitumen trails, explore the shops, cafes and enjoy delectable food, stop in at the Lavender Farm, treat yourself to a scenic flights with Barossa Helicopters or challenge yourself at Barossa Bowland and fantastic themed Dinosaur mini golf just to name even more options! Less than 10 minute drive from our front gate will have you at the lovely town of Lyndoch where the local IGA is a handy stop for those emergency essentials as well as the local bakery, craft shop, pub, post office, Lord of Lyndoch restaurant, Table Cafe Kies winery for starters. 10 Minures the other direction will see you at a new suburb Springwood which has a variety of shops and a Chemist, couple minutes further will have you at the lovely town of Gawler. The visitor center here is also home to local artists to exhibit their works. Like to kayak? Well a short drive will take you to spectacular opportunities to do so. Hire is also available at the site at different times of the year. Love exploring by bike? You are at the heartland of multiple trails you can access too. Local bike hire options are available too. Dog-friendly camping near Sandy Creek guide

Overview

On the southern cusp of the Barossa Valley—one of South Australia’s most famous wine regions—the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town of Sandy Creek is surrounded by rolling vineyards and verdant farmlands. Wine tasting in the Barossa Valley is the big draw, but you can also play a game of golf at Sandy Creek Golf Club and go bushwalking, bird-watching, and kangaroo-spotting at Sandy Creek Conservation Park. Campers have choices, too, whether you prefer to park your campervan on a local farm, check into one of the holiday parks or caravan parks, or pitch a tent amid the vines.

Where to go

Barossa Valley

Patchwork vineyards, charming stone villages, and scenic walking and biking trails stretch north of Sandy Creek in the Barossa Valley wine region. The main towns of Tanunda, Angaston, and Nuriootpa are popular with campers and day-trippers, but the real highlight is a wine-tasting tour, hopping between family-run vineyards and cellar-door wineries, and sampling the region’s world-famous shiraz.

Adelaide Hills

South of Sandy Creek, the sloping vineyards and storybook villages of the Adelaide Hills are just a short drive away. Renowned for its Pinot Noir and sparkling wines, this is another one of South Australia’s famed wine regions, but you can equally enjoy cycling along miles of biking trails, visit the German-inspired village of Hahndorf, or pick your own seasonal fruits at the local orchards.

Adelaide Plains

Beach lovers will want to head further afield to explore the Yorke Peninsula to the north or the Fleurieu Peninsula, but the wild coastline of the Adelaide Plains is a must for birding enthusiasts. Stretching along the St Vincent Gulf, the fertile plains and wetlands around Thompson Beach and Webb Beach make up the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park, a key site along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

When to go

The wineries of the Barossa Valley pull in big crowds during the summer months (December through February), but most stay open for tastings year-round. Sandy Creek is particularly charming in spring, when wildflowers brighten up the surrounding farmlands, and in autumn, when fall foliage transforms the landscapes. Book your campsite in advance if visiting during the high season (summer).
