This coastal town is a little-known gateway to the Great Barrier Reef islands.
If you’re looking to escape the crowds, this southern corner of the Great Barrier Reef is the place to go. A short drive from Rockhampton and an easy detour off the Pacific Coast Way, Yeppoon is known for its palm-lined beaches, lively café culture, and picturesque Yeppoon Lagoon. The headline acts lie offshore—take an island-hopping tour of the Keppel Bay Islands, explore the tropical beaches of Great Keppel Island, and enjoy water sports such as jet skiing and boom-netting. Or, venture further afield to snorkel and scuba dive along the Great Barrier Reef. Motorhome and RV campers will need to stay on the mainland (camping is tent-only on the islands), but there are plenty of options for coastal camping. Most holiday parks and caravan parks provide amenities such as a camp kitchen, BBQ areas, and a dump point, while many private Hipcamps also offer powered sites.
