Harper Farms is a fourth generation, family owned cattle property out of the small township of Cangai; just 50 minutes west of Grafton. Located along the Mann River, just one kilometre off the Gwydir Highway, campers will find easy access to our riverfront site. The property is bordered by the Dandahra Creek and the Mann River, and boasts a variety of native bird and wildlife; peacocks, platypus, ducks and the occasional pelican to name a few. The Mann River is open to fishing November - July; and is a local favourite as a kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and swimming destination. Beef cattle and stock horses have been run continuously on the property since the early 1900s, and our friendly horses and cows will often pay a visit to the campsite. Along with our working dogs, we also run a small breeding kennel of Golden Retrievers and Border Collies. Dogs are always welcome on the farm, and we simply ask that camp visitors keep them under their control during their stay. A small shop with basic amenities (groceries, camp supplies, fishing bait, fuel) is located at Jackadgery; a 15 minutes drive east on the Gwydir Highway. To the west of Harper Farms lies the Gibraltar Range which hosts Washpool National Park with walking trails, waterfalls, rainforest and swimming areas. Away from the city lights, the Cangai area offers exceptional stargazing and is popular with keen astronomers and photographers. Our property currently hosts one large campsite; ideal for family and large group gatherings. Booking the site includes complete privacy for your group whether large or small. Kentucky is a 400 acre property that was once a dairy, and is now devoted to raising horses and beef cattle. there is around three km of creek frontage and the land ranges from lush creek flats to rugged sandstone ridges. there are several dams and a billabong which are frequented by birds, including Jabiru storks. Wedgetail Eagles hunt overhead. Pretty faced wallabies are endemic and Koalas may sometimes be seen. Our property backs on to the Hogarth Range, where there are numerous orchards. We hope to convert the old dairy bails to a camp kitchen soon, but currently it can be used as shelter if required. Visitors need to be self contained at this stage. Pets are welcome if kept under control.

From vertiginous sandstone cliffs on which epipetrics cling tight, right through to palm-filled rainforests, and with two quite different creek systems (including a monster waterfall), you'll be spoiled for things to do and places to explore - without even leaving the property! HISTORY This land is Gumbaynggirr land. Please be particularly mindful of our First Nation's long presence on this land. In the 1800's, white men came seeking Red Cedar, closely followed by settlers having a go at dairying; though logging has remained this area's mainstay. This special property, despite last being selectively logged about 50 years ago, hosts many huge old-growth trees remaining steadfast for your discovery and wonder. And many more are continuing to grow out too. About 35 years ago about nine of this property's eastern-most 104 acres became part of a far larger nashi pear orchard which filled much of the flats of this top end of the valley that you see today. Ultimately they failed to set good commercial fruit, and the rootstocks took over. You can see remnant rows of these trees just south of the property, from along the road. (Beware though - they have spikes that could puncture Caterpillar tracks!) MORE RECENTLY extensive lantana control efforts have been undertaken as we now move into revegetating with native species and implementing a permaculture plan. Visitors enjoy: the pristine river; walking tracks through diverse terrain; starry night skies and campfires. Previous guests recommend staying at least two nights to soak up the atmosphere and explore the area. Choose from the 'Ant Shack' or four adjacent campsites with easy access and views to the Nymboida River. Shared facilities include a hot shower and composting toilets. You can walk, swim and kayak, explore the area or just relax for days. We can’t accommodate domestic animals or allow fishing, not even catch and release because we protect our wildlife and the endangered Eastern Cod. Black Mountain is remote but just 60 kilometres from Grafton or Coffs (via back way). 2WD access to our house is from Nymboida only. 4WD/AWD from Lowanna or Glenreagh and 4WD/AWD down to the river/campsite area - Not suitable for caravans. All proceeds from Airbnb and Hipcamp are invested in the continuing conservation of Black Mountain.

Harper Farms is a fourth generation, family owned cattle property out of the small township of Cangai; just 50 minutes west of Grafton. Located along the Mann River, just one kilometre off the Gwydir Highway, campers will find easy access to our riverfront site. The property is bordered by the Dandahra Creek and the Mann River, and boasts a variety of native bird and wildlife; peacocks, platypus, ducks and the occasional pelican to name a few. The Mann River is open to fishing November - July; and is a local favourite as a kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and swimming destination. Beef cattle and stock horses have been run continuously on the property since the early 1900s, and our friendly horses and cows will often pay a visit to the campsite. Along with our working dogs, we also run a small breeding kennel of Golden Retrievers and Border Collies. Dogs are always welcome on the farm, and we simply ask that camp visitors keep them under their control during their stay. A small shop with basic amenities (groceries, camp supplies, fishing bait, fuel) is located at Jackadgery; a 15 minutes drive east on the Gwydir Highway. To the west of Harper Farms lies the Gibraltar Range which hosts Washpool National Park with walking trails, waterfalls, rainforest and swimming areas. Away from the city lights, the Cangai area offers exceptional stargazing and is popular with keen astronomers and photographers. Our property currently hosts one large campsite; ideal for family and large group gatherings. Booking the site includes complete privacy for your group whether large or small. Our family and friends have gathered at Harper Farms for over a century to enjoy the beauty of the Cangai area, and we are excited for you to come “Camp Cangai” too!

HISTORY This land is Gumbaynggirr land. Please be particularly mindful of our First Nation's long presence on this land. In the 1800's, white men came seeking Red Cedar, closely followed by settlers having a go at dairying; though logging has remained this area's mainstay. This special property, despite last being selectively logged about 50 years ago, hosts many huge old-growth trees remaining steadfast for your discovery and wonder. And many more are continuing to grow out too. About 35 years ago about nine of this property's eastern-most 104 acres became part of a far larger nashi pear orchard which filled much of the flats of this top end of the valley that you see today. Ultimately they failed to set good commercial fruit, and the rootstocks took over. You can see remnant rows of these trees just south of the property, from along the road. (Beware though - they have spikes that could puncture Caterpillar tracks!) MORE RECENTLY extensive lantana control efforts have been undertaken as we now move into revegetating with native species and implementing a permaculture plan. Today the property is registered with Land For Wildlife and hosts a very wide mix of native vegetation communities. ACTIVITIES Bird watch. Climb. Abseil. Photograph wildflowers. Paint. Swim. Both of these are plumbed with hot and cold water and are a nice way to warm up after a dip in the refreshing spring fed Orara River. If you are sleeping in your car/van/rooftop tent, then your site will be on the driveway inside the Rainbow Farm Gate (see picture of Van on driveway) , with use of all campground amenities. If you are tent camping, then you can park your vehicle in our designated car parking area and set up in the campground. You will come here to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of `Black Mountain'. `Black Mountain’ is on Gumbainggir country. It is a registered conservation property bordering Nymboida River and Nymboi-Binderay National Park. Alastair and I have shared the property for more than 25 years and consider ourselves custodians of this precious place. Visitors enjoy: the pristine river; walking tracks through diverse terrain; starry night skies and campfires. Previous guests recommend staying at least two nights to soak up the atmosphere and explore the area. Choose from the 'Ant Shack' or four adjacent campsites with easy access and views to the Nymboida River. Shared facilities include a hot shower and composting toilets. You can walk, swim and kayak, explore the area or just relax for days. We can’t accommodate domestic animals or allow fishing, not even catch and release because we protect our wildlife and the endangered Eastern Cod. Black Mountain is remote but just 60 kilometres from Grafton or Coffs (via back way). 2WD access to our house is from Nymboida only. 4WD/AWD from Lowanna or Glenreagh and 4WD/AWD down to the river/campsite area - Not suitable for caravans. All proceeds from Airbnb and Hipcamp are invested in the continuing conservation of Black Mountain.
