75km from Lithgow · 1 site · Tent, RVUnwind in the seclusion of this private and safe bush camping site on the banks of the Wambuul-Macquarie River in the remote Killongbutta valley located half-way between Bathurst and Orange.
It’s a place where time stands still. Enabling you to reconnect with nature as you slow down and embrace the sounds of the river, wildlife and sheoaks when they ‘whisper secrets to the wind’.
Many stories and dreamings have come from this place which guarantees to inspire your imagination as an artist, writer, poet or musician.
You have access to 100 acres of bushland or enjoy a walk along Killongbutta Road which winds its way through spectacular Wiradjuri country where ancient stone quarries, corroboree sites and a warrior’s grave have been found.
Platypus, water dragons and river rats all live in the river. Be prepared to share the site with wombats who have burrowed their homes into the banks.
Road access to site is suitable for 2WD in dry weather. It is a short, steep drop with two tight corners not suitable for large caravans and RVs.
The site has a newly constructed long drop toilet, pets are allowed and bring your own firewood to ensure you have enough as it's becoming scarce around the site. Please take all rubbish with you.
Please note: Kids under 12 are free to support young families wanting to experience the bush. Please still add them to the booking as they will not be charged.
What is not allowed: shooters and trappers, illegal fishing, motor bikes, quad bikes and other noisy machines!
Killongbutta Road runs off Freemantle Road and is 36 kms from Bathurst. It is 40 kilometres from Orange through Gowan Road that joins Lower Lewis Ponds Road.
For your information, On the Stone is a podcast and publishing studio that produces a quarterly magazine for the Freemantle Road community. We have local history to share and can always provide information about our services.
We look forward to providing exclusive access to our river site for campers who will appreciate and respect this place which is our home.
Thank you to all the campers who have stayed at our retreat. You have all been wonderful, caring for our property and writing great reviews. The drop loo is taking on its own character with your messages and artworks.
