Despite its proximity to the busy NSW North Coast hub of Byron Bay to the north, the small seaside town of Lennox Head has retained a more old-school coastal town vibe. Most surfers come for Lennox's right-hand point break, but more can be found south of the headland and along Seven Mile Beach, which stretches north of town toward Broken Head. See Lennox from above on a tandem hang glide, or take a dip in Lake Ainsworth, a huge tea-tree-stained lake at the northern end of town, where you can also camp.

We offer you a well located and secure camp-site to explore the North Coast or for that overnight stay while you are travelling to your destination and need a safe place to camp. Our four campsites are spacious and are freshly mown flat grassed sites. Each campsite has 1 or 2 stone circles for campfires, with free kindling and free firewood supplied to all campsites. Whether you are a single traveller, a couple, family or group booking we have the campsite for you. We are family friendly and dog friendly. Dungarubba Fields is a private, rural setting on six acres on Bundjalung country. Four of our camp sites are situated across a small bridge in the back paddock, and one camp site is situated just before the bridge for those self driving campervans with a wider wheel-base. The paddock was once cleared and in recent years we have planted and cared for over 100 new Koala and rainforest trees. After the Northern Rivers floods of 2022 we are now continuing the bush regeneration beside the Dungarubba wetland which borders our property. Our camp-sites offer shade, space, wildlife and birdlife. Campfires are allowed 12 months a year depending on fire ratings and local conditions except on days of Total Fire Ban and the preceding evening going into a Total Fire Ban. We supply the free firewood to each campsite as we understand how important the campfire is to the camping experience. Outside the fire season we can supply a readymade Bonfire at an additional cost to your booking. Hipcampers can access fresh drinking water (rainwater) from our rainwater tanks, with an accessible tap near our home. Hipcampers have access to a downstairs flushing toilet at the house. We offer a Portaloo for larger group bookings situated beside your camp site as an optional extra for an additional cost. The Portaloo needs to be booked when you make your booking. The house on the property was originally built in 1903 as the Catholic Church of the nearby locality Riley's Hill. In the 1940’s it was moved to the current site after low attendance by parishioners who didn’t want to have to row across the Richmond River and get their feet wet to attend Mass. The church sold the building in the 1980’s and it was raised off the ground with two new wings attached on either side to become a private residence. The sugar cane and soybeans, however more surrounding land is being planted to Macadamia nuts which will change the look of the landscape in future. During May to November of an evening, you can look out for the occasional cane fire which is a historic part of the harvesting of sugar. The Richmond River and boat ramp is a short 2 minutes drive for both fishing and water skiing. The Broadwater National Park with sand-dunes and a fishing beach is only a 10 minute drive away. The Pacific Highway is 7 minutes drive away. The beautiful coastal village of Evans Head with shops, a medical clinic and a patrolled beach is just a 15 minutes drive. The nearest townships are Broadwater (2 fuel stations and a pub under new management), Coraki (junction of 2 rivers), Woodburn (pub with a bistro and a laundrette) and Evans Head (a township with most services). We are a 45 minutes drive to Byron Bay and 25 minutes to the coastal city of Ballina up the Pacific Highway or 25 minutes drive inland to the city of Lismore. We welcome friendly dogs and there is plenty of space for them to run around and chase balls or other dogs. Our dog Stella is a 4 year old Blue Heeler, who greets people from the balcony barking as you drive in. Don’t let the barking fool you as she loves visitors and their dogs. We expect owners to be responsible for their dogs and in particularly when there are Koalas close by. We ask dogs not to roam at night as Koalas are nocturnal (and so are other critters) and night-time is when they choose their food tree for the next day and roam around. Thankyou for considering Dungarubba Fields. We offer you a well located and secure camp-site to explore the North Coast or for that overnight stay while you are travelling to your destination and need a safe place to camp. Our four campsites are spacious and are freshly mown flat grassed sites. Each campsite has 1 or 2 stone circles for campfires, with free kindling and free firewood supplied to all campsites. Whether you are a single traveller, a couple, family or group booking we have the campsite for you. We are family friendly and dog friendly. Dungarubba Fields is a private, rural setting on six acres on Bundjalung country. Four of our camp sites are situated across a small bridge in the back paddock, and one camp site is situated just before the bridge for those self driving campervans with a wider wheel-base. The paddock was once cleared and in recent years we have planted and cared for over 100 new Koala and rainforest trees. After the Northern Rivers floods of 2022 we are now continuing the bush regeneration beside the Dungarubba wetland which borders our property. Our camp-sites offer shade, space, wildlife and birdlife. Campfires are allowed 12 months a year depending on fire ratings and local conditions except on days of Total Fire Ban and the preceding evening going into a Total Fire Ban. We supply the free firewood to each campsite as we understand how important the campfire is to the camping experience. Outside the fire season we can supply a readymade Bonfire at an additional cost to your booking. Hipcampers can access fresh drinking water (rainwater) from our rainwater tanks, with an accessible tap near our home. Hipcampers have access to a downstairs flushing toilet at the house. We offer a Portaloo for larger group bookings situated beside your camp site as an optional extra for an additional cost. The Portaloo needs to be booked when you make your booking. The house on the property was originally built in 1903 as the Catholic Church of the nearby locality Riley's Hill. In the 1940’s it was moved to the current site after low attendance by parishioners who didn’t want to have to row across the Richmond River and get their feet wet to attend Mass. The church sold the building in the 1980’s and it was raised off the ground with two new wings attached on either side to become a private residence. The sugar cane and soybeans, however more surrounding land is being planted to Macadamia nuts which will change the look of the landscape in future. During May to November of an evening, you can look out for the occasional cane fire which is a historic part of the harvesting of sugar. The Richmond River and boat ramp is a short 2 minutes drive for both fishing and water skiing. The Broadwater National Park with sand-dunes and a fishing beach is only a 10 minute drive away. The Pacific Highway is 7 minutes drive away. The beautiful coastal village of Evans Head with shops, a medical clinic and a patrolled beach is just a 15 minutes drive. The nearest townships are Broadwater (2 fuel stations and a pub under new management), Coraki (junction of 2 rivers), Woodburn (pub with a bistro and a laundrette) and Evans Head (a township with most services). We are a 45 minutes drive to Byron Bay and 25 minutes to the coastal city of Ballina up the Pacific Highway or 25 minutes drive inland to the city of Lismore. We welcome friendly dogs and there is plenty of space for them to run around and chase balls or other dogs. Our dog Stella is a 4 year old Blue Heeler, who greets people from the balcony barking as you drive in. Don’t let the barking fool you as she loves visitors and their dogs. We expect owners to be responsible for their dogs and in particularly when there are Koalas close by. We ask dogs not to roam at night as Koalas are nocturnal (and so are other critters) and night-time is when they choose their food tree for the next day and roam around. Phil is a great guy with a beautiful property. He was really friendly and cool to chat to but laid back and easy going. The space is so big that you can easily find a private spot to your liking. The mozzies are hardcore but not a problem if you bring some heavy duty bug repellent. There were a few other people camping as it was peak season during summer holidays but we felt secluded in our own beautiful temporary home in nature… will definitely be coming back!

Oh my god. Mosquito central! Phil the host is so lovely, and we really enjoyed staying here but man we were not prepared for the influx of the mozzies. None of our heavy duty repellants cut the mustard, and even our super smoky fires only staved them off for a little bit. We tried to go for a fish at the creek but could only last 10-20 minutes before driven out with bugs. One of our dogs broke out in a huge bumpy rash from them, and you could see a black cloud of them following the dogs everywhere even with repellant on them. We are avid campers, but have never experienced this level of them before. Mozzies aside, the camp site was so pretty. Lovely and flat, with beautiful bushlands around. The more private sites are towards the bushland, otherwise you’re very exposed. The camp was very well maintained and it’s clear Phil puts a lot of effort into this place. There was chopped up wood and limbs all over for firewood and he was more than happy for our pups to run off lead. The camp horse is also incredibly friendly and has to be one of the most tolerant horses I have ever met… not even tilting an ear at our boisterous dogs. We definitely would stay here again, just not any time at all near mosquito season!

This place had some of the best kept grounds I have ever seen at any Hipcamp. The lawns were mowed to perfection. Perfectly level grounds and so much room to spread out for privacy. If you are looking for a private, extremely quiet and peaceful place to unwind, wet a line or just enjoy wide open spaces, this is it. Kangaroos visit at dawn and dusk, along with a very friendly horse. Dogs are welcome too.

Loved the open space and not feeling like campers are on top of each other. 10min drive into evans heads. Can have campfires and lovely resident horse that comes to visit. Beautiful river for fishing and swimming. Very dog friendly property , plenty of space for them to stretch there legs oir 2 dogs loved it. Phil the owner and his son very lovely . Highly recommend.

Greg and all the guys were always looking after us. The place was very beautiful, and any camping spot has an stunning view of the vale. Sunsets also amazing from up there. The only inconvenience, if it is very rainy, the track to get to the spots may get very slippery, and the bathroom is a bit far. Other than that, a good place to camp.

The site is next to a train line; however, don’t be put off, there is only an occasional train. It is a very quiet location with plenty of room and lots of bird life around the creek, which was a great place to chill and have a swim. The toilets and showers were always clean, the camp kitchen is very well set up and has a great area to relax. We would 100% go back. Thanks Peter and Jannine.

I love this site, make sure you swim in the river, its nice and shallow for pets and children. Toilets provided, you will need to be able to survive off grid. Limited to no cell reception, the clouds sit ontop of the mountains and sunset + rise is immaculate. Owner is lovely and sells wood for a camp fire.

The best camping near Lennox Head guide

Where to go

Lennox Head

Lennox Head has limited campgrounds, but options do exist with a selection of cabins and campsites (powered and unpowered) for caravans and tents, and just steps from the beach as well as Lake Ainsworth. More campsites can be found about 10 minutes’ drive south of town at Skennars Head, a good base for the three-kilometre Coastal Walk from Sharpes Beach to Pat Morton Lookout on Lennox’s headland. You can also make the 14.5-kilometre trek along the coastline from Lennox Head south to Ballina.

Byron Bay

The perennially popular surf town of Byron Bay, 20 minutes north of Lennox Head, has five holiday parks and a number of private sites among its camping options. In town, campgrounds can offer doorstep access to the Cape Byron Walking Track leading to Byron Bay’s heritage lighthouse.

Ballina

Just 10 minutes south of Lennox Head, on the northern fringe of Ballina, campers can find scenic beachfront campgrounds with spacious unpowered tent sites, hot showers, and barbecue facilities. More than half a dozen campgrounds and holiday parks also sit further south in Ballina, the closest (and among the most scenic) at Shaws Bay. Camp near the lifeguard-patrolled Shelly Beach for a day on the water.

When to go

It’s warm enough to swim year-round at Lennox Head, though you’ll want a steamer (wetsuit) for surfing during the colder months from late May through August. The town is at its busiest during the summer and Easter school holidays, so visit outside these periods for a more low-key holiday. The waters of Lake Ainsworth can sometimes be affected by blue-green algae, so be sure to check official advice before jumping in.

Know before you go

  • Several shuttle services make the 20-minute journey from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport to Lennox Head. Public buses run between Byron Bay, Lennox Head, and Ballina.
  • Lennox Head has supermarkets, cafes, several restaurants, a pub, and a surf shop on the main street, where you can rent boards.
  • Free camping is not allowed in the Ballina and Byron shires.
