Known as the “Town of Windmills,” Gilgandra is a rural town that houses over 360 windmills next to the Castlereagh River. Find a riverfront caravan campsite, or travel north to Warrumbungle National Park, Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, for amateur astronomy and stargazing. During the day, walk the Breadknife and Grand High Tops track for phenomenal views of the park and rock formations. At night, park at a caravan campground in the area to gaze at the stars from a pull-through campsite with potable water and toilets. Timmallallie National Park at the heart of Pilliga Forest, one of the largest native forests in the country that protects diverse flora, a large koala population, and over 240 species of birds. Park next to one of the many walking tracks, including the award-winning Sculptures in the Scrub featuring sculptures celebrating Aboriginal culture, or climb Pilliga Forest lookout tower for picturesque views. Stay for a few days at a caravan park in the area with flush toilets, hot showers, and potable water.
