The beaten track is behind you at this South Australian stopover.
With less than a hundred inhabitants to its name, Culburra makes an unlikely destination for travellers, but its location—about halfway between Adelaide and Mount Gambier—makes it a strategic stopover for roadtrippers. While there’s nothing to see in the town itself and no facilities aside from a shaded picnic area (make sure to bring everything you need with you), self-sufficient campers can park their motorhome, campervan, or caravan at the Culburra Rest Stop. Alternatively, there’s a bush campground at nearby Mount Boothby Conservation Park, several tent and camper trailer campgrounds at Ngarkat Conservation Park, and lakeside camping in the neighbouring town of Tintinara, where you’ll also find a gas station and a small supermarket. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll be all set to continue south to the sandy beaches of the Limestone Coast or west to the coastal lagoons and wetlands of Coorong National Park.
