Located on the north shore of Lake Renwick near the US/Canadian border, Icelandic State Park is high on heritage and natural beauty. The Pioneer Heritage Center here is a great place to learn the fascinating stories of pioneers and several historic buildings within the park. There’s also the Gunlogson Homestead and Natural Preserve, a 200-acre natural wooded area with rare plants and wildlife that include the ladyfern, water arum, and two-seeded sedge, piliated woodpecker, western wood pewee, and the finescale dace. There are three miles of trails here for hiking and cross-country skiing. The Gunlogson Arboretum Nature Preserve is another option to keep you busy. It’s an arboretum and nature preserve that lies on both banks of the Tongue River and feature many mature elm and basswood trees.
The best time to visit Icelandic State Park is during the summer months when the weather is warm and all park facilities are open. Winter offers a serene, snowy landscape ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, though some amenities may be limited. Spring and fall can be unpredictable with changing weather conditions.
