I have been to Escondido many times.. Wonderful remote campground. It is on Google Maps so I suggest you look at it there before going. There is no pond at the campsite. I have stayed there many times but never seen anyone coming to fish or kayak. People come to walk and mountain bike. The trails (opposed to fire road) are often overgrown with poison oak -- at least when I go in the spring. Leather gloves and pruning shears advised , at least for spring, for the lead hiker. Fire trails into the mountains -- you see them in google maps -- are lovely and require no preparation. Also, the road to the camp is closed when it rains. But you can always walk or bike in the 4 mile dirt road.
