Lakeside camping in Georgia

Georgia may be known for its warm Atlantic beaches and rolling Appalachian mountains, but nature lovers shouldn't overlook the state's incredible lakes. The 38,000-acre Lake Lanier is the largest in the state, popular for its beach, boating, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and its close proximity to Atlanta. Fort Yargo Lake and High Falls Lake are other Atlanta area options, both year-round destinations with plenty of trails for hiking and biking. In the north Georgia mountains, Lake Hartwell is home to some of the best fishing in the state, including bass, catfish, and trout, while on the Florida border, Okefenokee Swamp boasts incredible biodiversity among its lakes and bogs, ideally explored by kayak and canoe. Most lakes feature campgrounds, RV parks, and cabins either on or near the water, with plenty more options in surrounding areas offering amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and spacious tent campsites.
