Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family-owned business since 1984. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter who came to Bethel was the first doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman. All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River. Our private established skiing/walking trails meander through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges and Mt. Washington. Nearby is Middle Intervale Farm, owned by John Carter, who produces his own vegetables and meat. He has a small, self-serve farm stand right on Intervale Road, next to Carter's. Guests can enjoy the property's views and amenities, such as hiking, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, biking, bird watching, and relaxing. Enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility in one of our three cabins in the Maine woods.

Camp Fern

Cozy Camp

Camp Fern was the perfect getaway. Anne fired up the woodstove & I arrived to a warm & cozy cottage. My favorite spot was watching the sun set from the upstairs. I enjoyed the quiet and beauty of nature. Fantastic communication from Anne. I look forward to returning some day.

Stonewall Cabin

Rustic comfort

Everything about Stonewall Cabin was just what we hoped and expected. The interior was impressively clean when we arrived. The setting (in the woods, right on the trail network) was pretty and convenient for XC skiing. Highway noise (from quite a few miles away) is audible from outside the cabin, but otherwise, the setting feels very secluded and natural. There was plenty of firewood and water in the provided jugs, and the gas lamps provided good light for reading and cooking (we brought our headlamps, but only used them for nighttime trips to the outhouse). Great stock of board games, too!

Farwell Mountain Cabin

Farewell Mountain stay

We stayed in Farewell Mountain cabin. We had selected the cabin as it looked to be far away from the other two cabins and secluded. The cabin itself met our expectations for a rustic off-the grid cabin (had beds with bottom sheets that worked for our sleeping bags, chairs and table, etc)….it even had lovely propane lamps, plenty of water jugs for drinking water and dishes, and a nice wood stove. The part that did not meet our expectations was outside of the cabin. Right near the cabin is a large house (off the Carter XC ski property) that is right in the amazing view of the mountains that would otherwise exist. We tried to switch to one of the other cabins upon arrival as with the house it most definitely did not feel secluded in the woods, but they were unfortunately already booked (which I totally understand and nothing for it). The other piece were the trails - we had booked as we enjoy trail running, hiking, and mountain biking, which were advertised as possibilities in the non-winter months…the trails (at least by Farewell Mountain) were not maintained for such activities and had high grasses that made them unattractive to hiking/biking/running. We instead made use of the trails in town, which were great. The host was communicative and the cabin is in a good location for accessing off property Bethel area activities.

Camp Fern

Camp Fern Cabin

Camp fern is awesome!! Has a nice view to the west(?) from the bed room window. Very cozy cabin. Easy access yet private and secluded. Well stocked with various kitchen odds and ends as well as candles and lighting. Wood-stove worked wonderfully with plenty of wood. We will definitely be back! We love to stay in cabins and get off grid for a bit, which this is perfect for.

Stonewall Cabin

Awesome Cabin For The Family!

We had a blast at stonewall cabin! Plenty of space for a family of 4 with two double beds and a futon downstairs and two lofts each with a twin mattress and sleeping pad. Plenty of games to play and a great spot to hike around and check out the views. The lodge at the base of the mountain has fat bikes, cross country skis, and snowshoes to rent. Can’t wait to come back when there is more snow and have a day of skiing followed by a warm night by the wood stove in the cabin! Hosts were great and Charlie the dog is super friendly!
