The Guemes North Homestead is ten acres of gorgeous tall trees, clearings, homestead buildings, pond, trails, renewable energy gear, and more, set in the middle of the north end of Guemes Island (a 7-minute ferry from downtown Anacortes), at the end of a 1/3-mile dead-end driveway. It has nature, quiet, and privacy. It includes a 30-year-old orchard, a developed garden with fine soil, a pond with rope swing and waterslide, several solar and wind energy systems, and multiple buildings. It's about a mile in two directions from the Pacific Ocean beach, and is surrounded by wooded acreage that is criss-crossed with trails and friendly neighbors, on an island with about 700 year-round residents and an active weekend/summer population. Homestead owner Ian Woofenden is an expert in renewable energy systems. He's lived off-grid at the homestead for 40-plus years, where he raised his large family and managed several small businesses. He now consults, sells, writes, and teaches about renewable energy in the U.S. and in Central America. If your idea of a great getaway is to help out and do physical work, just ask Ian. There's always something going on at the homestead, including garden and orchard work, trail building, wood cutting, construction, sawmilling, and more. Ian built this place, and has a broad knowledge of lots of homestead and sustainability topics. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience with guest, students, and interns. Quick reminders: NOT a party spot. The homestead goes silent from 9 PM to 9 AM. Not a place for lots of car trips in and out. Bikers can ask for 25% discount code (or use bike listing). Two-night minimum. No pets. One tent per site; one car per site. Book a separate tent site for friends/family who want to camp near you. We can't accommodate day visitors; if you want guests, book a site for them, or meet them at the beach, park, or Guemes mountain.. Bring your own bedding, matches, flashlights. Questions always welcome.

Cozy Tiny House in the Woods
We had such an amazing time staying at the Jess cabin. Ian was very friendly and welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much from him during our tour of the property. By day, my partner and I visited the beach and played on the playground Ian built- which was sooo much fun. By night we enjoyed the relaxing coziness of the cabin. We will definitely be coming back here regularly, this place is really special.

Cozy Tiny House in the Woods
Magical
Ian's place, the Jess Cabin, and whole package was magical. It was everything that we wanted it to be and more. Ian's hospitality was outstanding. The love, care, and effort that Ian has put into the whole property can be seen, felt, and experienced at anytime, at anyplace. We really enjoyed our stay, and have zero complaints. It was well worth it. I have no hesitation what-so-ever in recommending Ian and what he has created. The surreal trails, the cabin, the forest, the water, the sawmill, the pond, sauna, the access to the channels/ocean......all of it....just exceptional. Annnnndd....it is done on renewable energy and well water. It was an outstanding experience for us. Thank you Ian! L&A Sacramento, CA. 5 days 4 nights ending 9/28/24

Tent Camping in Woods or Field
Always a magical experience. The small touches like the fresh flowers at the campsite…and then the rope swing into the pond. It’s really the best—it’s what keeps us coming back every year! Truly a special place.

Tent Camping in Woods or Field
As usual, Ian’s woods are magical. This is very rustic (campsite without running water - though potable water water is available a short walk away). The bathroom is an outhouse up the trail but uses sawdust so there is never really any smell. He provides water and soap for handwashing. Fresh cut flowers adorn most surfaces. So quiet, a great night’s sleep. Saw a mother deer with a young buck just 6 feet from the trail one afternoon.

Rustic Barn w/ Outdoor Kitchen
The barn and orchard is a great spot at Ian’s. Ian made it easier by installing a pump and sink for dish washing water and a drinking water container. He has some basic kitchen gear there and prep surfaces. The garden and orchard are lovely for breakfasts in the sun. The elevated bathroom with a view is cool too.
