Poor communication
Unfortunately, we never made it the the campsite due to traveling issues. I reached out to the host and never received any communication back.

Camping After a Hurricane
By a miracle, I was able to drive into Burke's Garden after Hurricane Helene went through. The power was out, but since Mattie and her family are Amish, it didn't matter. The festival I came for was cancelled. Mattie directed me to a dryish spot on some gravel since 9 inches of rain had fallen and she advised not to drive my two-wheel drive car on the camping fields. Since all the power was out in the valley and I was on Amish land anyway, I saw more stars than I'd seen on a summer night ever! Beautiful! The Amish breakfast I had asked for was delicious and Mattie's family was very pleasant to speak with. I met a few of their friendly dogs and their carriage horse who appreciated a couple of apples. It was a lovely experience, even if the Fall Festival was cancelled. Highly recommend.

Mattie’s was very nice and they even brought us a latrine at sunset as they had forgotten to put one out for us. We had intended to stay 2 nights and leave on Monday, but we knew they were uncomfortable with us driving in and out on a Sunday so we decided when we left to hike the AT we would pack up and just leave. The presence of a store was very nice but I knew I would appreciate a shower so heading to Hungry Mother park became an easy decision.

I spent a nice weekend at Mattie’s, camping in the field behind the house/ general store, in my class B camper van. There are no marked sites, you just pull up somewhere close to the fire ring. This place is a textbook example for a pastoral setting! On a hill top, surrounded by green pastures with neat farm buildings in the distance. Keep in mind this is an unimproved farm field, complete with fresh “cow pies”. A real deal, agricultural setting. Unfortunately during my stay the general store and the home cooking was not available as Mattie had recently broken her wrist. But no problem for me as I’m self contained. There is a second general store, about 1.6 miles away, that makes excellent sandwiches. So there is good food available. But the real treasure here is Burke’s Garden. You have to experience it for yourself.

Unfortunately this experience wasn’t great, this “open pasture” was filled with sheep and their poop. We were told by the host this is managed by an external person so forgot we were coming and nothing was as advertised in the listing. There was not access to portable toilets, no fire wood, etc. We ended up leaving that night and received a refund although the host never apologized for ruining our trip.
I would recommend only booking during the summer months and asking the host some follow up questions so you have no surprises.
