Hike or bike 2 miles into a completely secluded cabin on 600 acres with panoramic views of the Green Mountains. You’ll arrive to a cozy cabin that can comfortably sleep 2, or up to 4 if needed, equipped with a potbelly stove and basic cooking equipment. The mountain, once a source of wood for the Stanley Tool factory and a site for bridle trails in the summer and Nordic skiing in the winter, is now best known as a the birthplace of the Spartan Race and host of the infamous Death Races, as well being a popular mountain biking destination called the Green Mountain Trails. The trail system boasts 25 miles of flowy trails for all abilities as well as a stone staircase climbing from the base to the top of the trails at Shrek’s Stone Hut. Awake to an incredible sunrise and panoramic Green Mountain views after a night underneath a starry dome unblemished by city lights. Chilly evenings in the hut are easily tempered by a pot belly stove fed by seasoned wood. A built in bunk accommodates two people, but it’s possible to sleep up to four guests.Awake to an incredible sunrise and panoramic Green Mountain views after a night underneath a starry dome unblemished by city lights. My 12 yo daughter and I made the trek to Shrek during a polar vortex in Jan - it was awesome! The pot belly stove offered the right amount of heat to counter the cold and we benefited from the fantastic views. We loved being off the grid for a couple of nights.

Great little cabin
The hike up was relatively easy despite the slushy snow, and over well-marked trails. Once at the top, the views were probably astounding -- it was December, and cloudy/rainy/foggy so I could see only the hint of what was around. That said, the woods below were lovely and full of straightforward trails through a range of birch and pine forest, with plenty of animal tracks in the snow. (Unfortunately I'm a loud hiker, so there was no way I was going to see an actual animal!). The cabin itself was well-stocked with supplies and insulated (as in: you could see the roof insulation and weatherstripping around doors and windows) and had really just the right vibe. I panicked a little when I saw how little firewood there was, but it was more than enough--the potbellied stove is incredibly efficient at warming the space. I do recommend bringing food in mouse-proof containers, as the critters like the warm shelter as much as you do! Probably that's less of an issue in spring/summer. Visitors to the site were friendly and fun to chat with--I imagine it's a blast when the weather's better.

We had a wonderful stay at Shrek's Cabin. Directions were clear and host was very helpful. Beautiful views from the mountain top. Well stocked with firewood and water. Highly recommend staying here!

so beautiful and cozy!
My boyfriend and I loved staying at Shrek's! We arrived super late, and had to trek a decent distance through the snow in the dark, but the path was easy to follow. If there's snow, definitely recommend snow shoes! We had everything we needed in the cabin in terms of utensils, plates, bowls, soap, etc., which was super helpful! It was super scenic and beautiful and Matt was so accommodating. It felt so private, which was nice.

Magic Lives Here
Shrek's Hut is absolutely magical. I'm so grateful to have discovered this for a last-minute getaway - unfortunately a quick one, so I will definitely need to be back to explore the area more. Everything is precisely as described, if not even better! Equipped with everything needed for an off-grid escape; easy to find the trailhead and the cabin itself along the well-marked trails; plenty of firewood to keep the cabin cozy (the stove is super efficient, just a few sticks was all I really needed on a ~30 degree night - be mindful because it did get momentarily a bit too warm in there, as others have mentioned as well); well kept inside and comfy bunks. It's clear that Matthew takes great care in this space from all the little details, which just adds to the special feeling of being up there and sharing the space with so many other thoughtful people (in spirit...too chilly for human visitors as other comments have mentioned). I loved all the beautiful quotes painted onto rocks around the fire pit and cabin. And obviously the views - just incredible. I'm not sure I've ever woken up in a cooler place. Do not hesitate if this is calling to you. Thank you for everything, Matt!
