Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

We love this place. Second visit and we’ll be back! The river is great for keeping cool and good for fishing. The welcome is warm and Menard has good facilities including free water and large bags of ice for $1.99 at Menard Station. The pool in Menard open 2-6pm is great too. Friendly town. Beautiful property.

The owners are so sweet and the area is beautiful. The bathroom was very simple to use and I felt very safe. They have dogs that roam around and will often come and stay with you or swim with you. Also, the other campers we met were also extremely nice and outgoing. The stars were AMAZING. The towns nearby are definitely worth a visit, especially the cafe Lazy Ladle in the town 10 minutes away. Everyone in the town is so sweet and welcoming.

My friends and I had such an incredible time getting together here for the weekend! It was my pups first time out camping but Bjorn hung out with us all weekend and showed her what’s up. We will definitely be back once the weather cools down!

Shade @ River View May 19, 2024
We stayed @ River View on nite#2 & took refuge under the shade trees! River View & Sky View sites are distant neighbors near the same San Saba swimming hole. Make sure to dip in & rent the canoe for a beautiful ride downstream & back. Note: all sites offer plently of privacy from one another. We hit it just right easing into summer.. hot but breezy, few insects, cool water to swim in. What more is there in life?! Thanks, Low Gear! We'll be back!

Perfect @ Skyview May 18, 2024
We took a last minute, gamble- the other sites w/ shade trees were booked. Corresponding w/ Logan was easy & our questions were answered promptly - "Does the San Saba have cool water to swim & canoe in?" YES.. 1 minute down the hill. Super hosts. We were greeted upon arrival, directed to our site & asked if we desired any of the purchasable items they offer. Skyview, as advertised, is in full sun w/ full view of the night sky. Soon we got a visit from their sweet dog, Bjorn, who made fast friends w/ our pup. Truly set the pace for the rest of our stay. So relaxing & enjoyable!
