Notable Camping Loops

  • Best for family campers: Cedar Grove Camp is within easy reach of the beach, children’s playground, and day-use picnic areas. It's the most central to all amenities, including showers, restrooms, and water and electric hook-ups. Sites 9 through 12 are close to the lake.
  • Best for RVs: Poplar Point Camp has full hook-ups and 15 campsites with lake views. This is the place to be if you're looking for water, sewer, and electrical hookups. Most spots are on the shorter side though, so be aware that bigger rigs may find it challenging to get in.
  • Best for hikers: At the northernmost tip of the campground, Shady Springs Camp has quiet sites away from the lake, along with the Fossil Ridge Trail right on its doorstep.

Just got home from a weekend of camping here! We have a 35' fifth wheel and were in spot 57. Chose this spot as it does not look out on the backside of others camping. Lake is about 10' low, but we still had water in our view. Bathrooms are very clean if you should need them! Campground filled up Friday evening, but cleared out Sunday afternoon. We had the place to ourselves Sunday night and Monday! Great trails for the dogs and people! Quick drive outside of Ft Worth.

Your guide to camping in Cleburne Campground

Overview

Biking

Whether you are experienced mountain biker or biker in training, the diverse trails in Cleburne State Park present challenges for all experience levels. The 5.5 miles of trails take you through the woods, along the lake, and over limestone hills.

Boating

The absence of motorized boats at Cedar Lake due to the "no wake" rule make for some great bird watching and boat fishing from your kayak or canoe.

Fishing

Cast your line and see if you can catch the largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill that fill the clear blue waters of spring-fed Cedar Lake.

Hiking

Cleburne State Park offers eight different trails for both hiking and mountain biking. There are several outlook spots along the trails, where you can enjoy sweeping views of Cedar Lake and the dam that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in the 1930's.

Paddling

Cedar Lake is perfect for breaking out the canoe, kayak or paddle boat, as the 116-acre lake has a "no wake" rule. Enjoy the peace and quiet as you cast your line in for bass or redear sunfish.

Swimming

Cedar Lake offers several designated swimming areas for you to cool off after a long bike ride or hike. There's no lifeguard on duty here, so the park recommends you always swim with a friend. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic in Cleburne State Park's day use area, or stay for the weekend at one of the lakeside camping spots.

Wildlife watching

Another great destination in Northern Texas for bird watching, there have been over 300 species of birds sighted in Cleburne State Park. The Spillway Hiking Trail offers the best birding opportunities, or head down to Cedar Lake for the waterbirds, which are most popular during the winter when there are less boats on the water.
