A scenic view of Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The "Bottomless Pit" is a famous feature in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, but it is not truly bottomless. The name comes from the fact that, in the early days of the cave's exploration, the depth of the pit was difficult to determine due to the darkness and the way debris would seemingly disappear when thrown into it. In reality, the Bottomless Pit is approximately 140 feet (42.7 meters) deep. It is still an impressive and fascinating feature within the caverns, and visitors can see it during their tour of the cave.
