How do I safely look at the eclipse?

A scenic view of 2024 Solar Eclipse

To safely look at an eclipse, solar eclipse glasses are required. Only once the sun is completely blocked by the moon—in the period known as totality—is it safe to take off these special glasses. You must then put them back on after totality is over.

We all know that it isn’t safe to look at the sun. So, what about during a solar eclipse? The same is true, even when the sun is almost completely blocked out by the moon, so you'll need authorized solar eclipse glasses to view almost the entire 2024 total solar eclipse. The same goes for those photographing the solar eclipse with a camera—a special solar filter is required for photographing a solar eclipse at any point other than totality. Find a campsite for the 2024 eclipse.
