Welcome to Rocky's Retreat! Our little hobby farm is 28 acres with views to the Porongurup Mountain Range. Tucked away in quiet Takalarup, we are surrounded by nature, in particular - amazing bird life! Kangaroos are often seen jumping through the paddocks on dusk. The sunsets from the campsite over the Porongurup Ranges are a great way to finish each day at Rocky's Retreat. Meet our friendly resident sheep - pellets available to feed them, and they love pats!
We only accept one booking at a time to allow our guests privacy and plenty of space.
Well-behaved, socialised, on-lead pets are welcome too.
We are located approx. 40km from Mt Barker, 50km from Albany, 15km to Porongurup National Park and 45km to Stirling Range National Park. Within a short drive you can find incredible local wineries, cafes and restaurants. The property makes a great base camp for day trips to Denmark, Albany, Mt Barker, Stirling Ranges and the Porongurup Ranges. If you are wanting to cool off at the campsite, a swimming spot on the upper Kalgan River is 800 metres down the road.
Please note - we have recently undertaken significant native revegetation around the camp site, planting approx. 6,000 native seedlings for native flora and fauna habitat. Therefore, the site looks different to some of the previous photos showing open paddocks. Please refer to the photo in our listing taken in Summer that shows the native revegatation with tree guards around each seedling.
Campers must be self-contained, with their own in-built camp toilet, and leave no trace. Dump points are available in Mt Barker and Albany. Telstra works in most areas. We don't take bookings for tents/swags by themselves at this stage.
We look forward to welcoming you to stay at Rocky's Retreat. The property is new for camping and we are always looking to improving our offering, so we would love your feedback.

The property is on the lower side of Ulster rd. It is a shared driveway so please turn left into 219 not right as this is the neighbours ... drive down the driveway past the 3 cottages and parkup on the left hand side of property. Please do not drive on the lower grassed area.
We currently run self-contained cottages on the property, although we have a lovely spot in the far corner of the property that we can offer for a fully self-contained caravan or RV.
The site offers these guests views of a large lake equipped with kayaks, a paddleboat, and 6 acres of landscaped grounds.

We set up our camper trailer for 4 nights in the lovely big grassy area next to the dam. There were quite a few other campers but everyone was quiet and respectful and still had plenty of space between. The paddock is surrounded by beautiful big gum trees - plenty of bird life. Margaret was very friendly - she popped past to welcome us the evening we arrived and was quick to reply when we messaged.
Albany put on a good show for our stay - minimal wind and plenty of sunshine. A special part of the world.

Such a beautiful campsite overlooking the dam. Easy to spend the day watching the ducks, listening to the birds and having the frogs sing a beautiful lullaby. Kathryn and her family have created a little piece of heaven walking distance from Mt. Barker. We definitely will go back, thank you for sharing!

My partner and I loved this off-grid getaway. It was super comfortable and such a memorable experience. It had everything we needed, including a BBQ, sink, and compost toilets. Falling asleep to the frogs at night was lovely, and it was great seeing the critters sunbathing during the day. The location was perfect too, right between Albany and Denmark. We’ll definitely be back!

Lovely location, less than a 10 min drive to the nearest beach. This camp spot is tucked away on a quiet block, with ocean glimpses.
We woke to the sound Kookaburras & enjoyed watching the Willy Wagtails hop amongst the natural bush.
The block has a generous amount of shade & privacy, making it perfect fir a weekend break.

I found it to be a real nice place to stay, it’s in a very quiet township that is quite easy to get to. Shell is real nice to talk to and great with her communication, the people around the area are also really lovely. The site itself is nice, it has a fence around it so I didn’t have to worry about my puppy running off, it’s private so I didn’t have to worry too much about being disturbed. Even whilst being within a little township it still felt like bush camping. It was a great stay and I would definitely stay again if I am around the area, I highly recommend.

The site was lovely and level by the dam and very pretty. It was a great base for exploring the area. The hosts were really friendly and the produce was welcome and completely unexpected thank you . These are 2 sites opposite one another across the dam and quite private with a scattering of trees. Very occasional road noise and the odd train but a fantastic spot !!

Absolutely loved this campsite. The mountain views are stunning.. We were able to do wine tastings and even buy wine made from grapes grown right on site, which was such a cool bonus. The amenities are basic, but the toilets were really clean and the bush showers were fine. Overall, it’s a relaxed, beautiful spot and definitely one of our favourite camp spots — would highly recommend
