The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Incorporated is facilitating the development of the disused rail corridor from Taragoola (near Gladstone, Central Queensland), through the Boyne Valley, on to Monto, Eidsvold, Mundubbera and south through to Gayndah in the Burnett Valley. This property covers those campsites in or adjacent to the Boyne Valley. The corridor is an inland link between Gladstone and Gayndah, which has great natural scenery, wildlife and historical structures with small country towns spread along its length. There are several campsites (shown here on Hipcamps), on former railway sidings along the trail and a range of other accommodation types, some community NFP operated, which we encourage you to support. Our website (https://www.boyneburnettinlandrailtrail.org.au) will showcase the attractions along the trail, along with location maps, trail maps, and much other useful information.

We have the goal of becoming as self sufficient as possible and currently we are producing a large amount of our own food. We have a massive array of animals and always are having new additions, which is always exciting. We are open to people coming to just experience what we have created or even getting their hands dirty. We have learnt so much coming here and are happy to pass on what ever knowledge that we have gained but also open to learn from you all too. We are located about 40mins from Agnes Water and are super connected to the amazing Agnes community. We have a couple of areas that power can be tapped into and also a second outside bathroom that is welcomed to be used.

(View the video of Cania Gorge as featured on Travelling Australia.) The town of Monto is a friendly, quaint, rural town on Australia's Country Way (A3) and is home to a wide variety of historical, cultural and artistic experiences in the North Burnett. Monto is the northern and youngest town in the North Burnett and is situated approximately 200 km west of the coastal cities of Bundaberg and Gladstone. Monto is one of the newest towns in Queensland having come into existence as recently as 1924 when, under the Land Development Scheme, larger properties were resumed and prime agricultural land was provided, in smaller lots, to soldiers who had returned from World War I. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area around Monto was home to people from the Gureng Gureng Aboriginal language group. Enjoy some good old country hospitality and 'tucka' at 1 of 2 town pubs. In town, you will find cafes, great coffee shops, supermarkets, Australia Post, banking, pharmacies, and a variety of other shops. There is also a medical center and a hospital. Bowls and golf can be enjoyed whilst visiting Monto.

The best camping in Kroombit Tops National Park, QLD guide

Overview

About

Kroombit Tops National Park invites adventurers to explore its rugged landscapes, rich history, and diverse ecosystems. From scenic lookouts to the remnants of a WWII bomber, the park offers a unique blend of cultural and natural attractions. Campers can revel in the serenity of bush camping, with fire-rings provided for a traditional experience amid the park's eastern slopes and subtropical rainforests.

Notable campgrounds

  • Griffiths Creek camping area - Accessible by conventional vehicles in dry conditions, offering a traditional bush camping experience.
  • Razorback camping area - A high-clearance 4WD haven, perfect for campers seeking a remote and rugged escape in dry weather.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as camping areas in Kroombit Tops are limited and can fill up quickly during peak seasons.
  • Check the park alerts for any closures or restrictions that might affect campground availability.
  • Be flexible with your dates, as mid-week stays may offer better availability than weekends.
  • Explore nearby camping options to maximise your chances of finding a site during busy times.

When to go

The best time to visit Kroombit Tops National Park is during the cooler months from April to September. The weather is more pleasant for hiking and camping, and the risk of flash flooding is lower. Summer months can be quite hot and wet, making access roads slippery and potentially impassable.

Know before you go

  • Check the latest park alerts for any access restrictions, especially during wet conditions when roads can become impassable.
  • Bring enough water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, as well as a portable stove to reduce fire danger.
  • Mobile phone coverage is limited, so consider bringing a satellite phone or personal locator beacon for emergencies.
  • Be mindful of wildlife and practice safe food storage to protect both yourself and the animals.
  • Respect the park's cultural heritage, including the WWII bomber crash site, by leaving it as you found it.
