Luxury Pembrokeshire glamping with wood-fired hot tubs, near the Daugleddau estuary

The site might be called The Little Retreat, but it’s big on glamping luxuries. Located in the upper walled garden of the Old Castle Estate in Lawrenny, Wales, here you can unwind in geodesic domes or stargazing bell tents with plenty to do on your doorstep. Take a paddleboard out onto the nearby Cleddau river, book a fine dining feast in the estate’s Annwn restaurant, or unwind with a holistic treatment session before sinking into your wood-fired hot tub. There’s everything you need here for a feel-good escape, all in prime position for exploring the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The Little Retreat is in a unique location, situated in the garden that once provided food for Lawrenny Castle. While the castle no longer remains, in its place is a haven for wellness, with an emphasis on mental and physical rejuvenation. This is exemplified by its Mind Space treatment room – where experienced holistic therapists provide everything from aromatherapy to pampering pedicures – and the nature that surrounds you. Take a walk through Lawrenny's ancient oak woodland, with a circular route taking you riverside, past a popular local pub for a pint, and then to a picturesque quayside tearoom with views out onto the estuary.

The accommodation here is second to none and ideal for couples and small families alike. The insulated geodomes are equipped like a luxury hotel room with their emperor bed, WiFi, and woodburner, while the appropriately named 'Stargazer tents' provide a telescope and pull-back roof that lets you admire the night sky. You don't need to worry about shared amenities here – all guests have access to their own private facilities, including an outdoor kitchen, heated bathroom, and a hot tub for the domes (outdoor bathtubs for tents). It's enough you won't want to leave. But with the idyllic seaside town of Tenby less than 30 minutes away and scenic walks aplenty, it's advised you use your time in The Little Retreat to embark on a big adventure.

Luxury Geodome - private hot tub
Fantastic stay!!
My family and I had an amazing time at The Little Retreat. We chose 3 domes next to each other and had a fantastic time. The bed was super comfy and the rooms had excellent amenities, kitchen and bathroom were both fab. We had a beautiful view, lovely weather and a short drive to Freshwater East. We would definitely stay again and would recommend to friends! The domes were clean and the picnic bench and outdoor furniture were great for the hot weather. My sister absolutely loved the hot tub! Thanks again, we would love to come back.

Luxury Stargazing Tents
We enjoyed our 2-day stay at Amber’s stargazer tent. It was very spacious, clean and cosy. Even though we couldn’t see stars because of the rain. It was a wonderful experience watching and listening to the rain while stay clean inside. Bath was great, and a private open kitchen was a plus for glamping. Highly recommend!

The Little Retreat is set in the upper walled garden of the old castle estate in Lawrenny. Lawrenny is on a peninsula of the River Cleddau estuary upriver from Milford Haven where it branches off towards the Cresswell and Carew Rivers and is in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Lawrenny developed around fishing, boat building and as a staging point for quarried limestone extracted from quarries upriver. In the 1830s there were 422 inhabitants and there was a ferry over the Cresswell River. Racing stables in the village provided Wales' first and only Grand National winner, Kirkland, at Aintree in 1905. Lawrenny also played a role in the World War II as a base for Supermarine Walrus seaplanes and a training centre, known as HMS Daedalus II, operated by the Fleet Air Arm.
Nearby attractions

Tenby is a 25-minute drive away, widely regarded as one of the best-looking seaside towns in Wales. It's a perfect place for a day out in the sun, with boats embarking from its Castle Beach for pleasant sea-fishing trips and tours of the surrounding islands where you'll see a playful seal or two. If you're with the family, it's just over a 10-minute drive to Oakwood Theme Park, with plenty of activities from rollercoasters to themed rides and soft play areas for the little ones. History buffs will want to make the 20-minute trip to the medieval Pembroke Castle, with a history dating back to the Battle of Hastings and guided tours included in the price of admission. Bookings aren't necessary here, so feel free to walk in and buy a ticket on the day.

Food and drink

The Lawrenny Arms is a little over a 10-minute walk away, a quayside pub with views out onto the water. A popular local for sailors who moor up on the pub's pontoon, you can enjoy a pint while watching the bobbing fishing boats come and go. Expect hearty pub grub, too, with large portions and a good Sunday lunch. Walk a little further beyond the pub and you'll find the award-winning Quayside Tearoom, where guests can tuck into a selection of lunchtime favourites and specials, from roast lobster to local crab and freshly baked baguettes. It's not just tea that's served here – indulge in a pitcher of Sangria while admiring the estuary. On the evenings, The Little Retreat's estate houses the Annwn restaurant, where guests can enjoy a unique dining experience as part of its 10-course menu. Annwn specialises in wild food, meaning that everything you're served is "foraged" produce that's locally sourced, and as such changes with the seasons. It's a one-of-a-kind treat that foodies won't want to miss!
