Established as an exclusive girls' summer camp in the 1920s, Camp Wihakowi, has seen many generations of visitors, including boys, added to the camp in the 1940s. Other organizations that followed were the Vermont Congregational Conference in the 1950s-60s, the Life and Light Center in the 1970s and 80s, and in the 1990s Camp Wihakowi was resurrected as a children's summer camp by Steve Norris and Sue Keefer, focusing on respect for nature, the local wilderness, outdoor survival, Native American traditions, tracking, and especially, fun for kids. The Woods at Wihakowi, established in 2005, offers guests many opportunities to experience the picturesque natural surroundings, and maintains the spirit of the most recent Camp Wihakowi, with a family-friendly atmosphere. In 2014, name was changed to The Woods Lodge, which better describes the place and what it has to offer. Learn more about this land: Nestled in the Green Mountains in Northfield, Vermont, The Woods Lodge is an historic former summer camp, that has been reinvented to cater to today's travel and hospitality needs, with a well-appointed Main Lodge with dining and meeting spaces and guest rooms, rustic-yet-comfortable accommodations in bunkhouses, cabins, housekeeping cottages, and 36 acres to enjoy. The Woods Lodge is in a natural setting, off the beaten path, that will allow you to get away from the rest of the world, yet easily accessible. The Woods is only 3 hours from Boston, Montreal, Hartford or Albany and 5 minutes off the interstate, yet it is worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A short drive to many of Central Vermont's best attractions, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas, Ben and Jerry's and Cabot Creamery, brewery tours, recreational activities and dining establishments, this secluded hideaway is just seconds from the VAST snowmobile trail system and the Paine Mountain biking center and trails, and has its own 36-acres of meadows, hiking and snowshoeing trails, a brook with swimming holes and a waterfall, for plenty of year-round outdoor enjoyment and relaxation.
