Hike or bike 2 miles into a completely secluded cabin on 600 acres with panoramic views of the Green Mountains. You’ll arrive to a cozy cabin that can comfortably sleep 2, or up to 4 if needed, equipped with a potbelly stove and basic cooking equipment. The mountain, once a source of wood for the Stanley Tool factory and a site for bridle trails in the summer and Nordic skiing in the winter, is now best known as a the birthplace of the Spartan Race and host of the infamous Death Races, as well being a popular mountain biking destination called the Green Mountain Trails. The trail system boasts 25 miles of flowy trails for all abilities as well as a stone staircase climbing from the base to the top of the trails at Shrek’s Stone Hut. Awake to an incredible sunrise and panoramic Green Mountain views after a night underneath a starry dome unblemished by city lights. Chilly evenings in the hut are easily tempered by a pot belly stove fed by seasoned wood. Shrek's Hut is absolutely magical. I'm so grateful to have discovered this for a last-minute getaway - unfortunately a quick one, so I will definitely need to be back to explore the area more. Everything is precisely as described, if not even better! Equipped with everything needed for an off-grid escape; easy to find the trailhead and the cabin itself along the well-marked trails; plenty of firewood to keep the cabin cozy (the stove is super efficient, just a few sticks was all I really needed on a ~30 degree night - be mindful because it did get momentarily a bit too warm in there, as others have mentioned as well); well kept inside and comfy bunks. It's clear that Matthew takes great care in this space from all the little details, which just adds to the special feeling of being up there and sharing the space with so many other thoughtful people (in spirit...too chilly for human visitors as other comments have mentioned). I loved all the beautiful quotes painted onto rocks around the fire pit and cabin. And obviously the views - just incredible. I'm not sure I've ever woken up in a cooler place. Do not hesitate if this is calling to you. Thank you for everything, Matt!

Fantastic! Matt sent a great description of all the details; directions, supplies, what to expect. We were fortunate to have the November super moon and an amazing sunrise. Looking forward to returning for a few days in warmer weather (maybe biking up next time). Thanks Matt for providing all the extra things we enjoyed; games, journals, art supplies, lanterns, sights to trail maps, history of Shrek's cabin...everything was just wonderful.

Shrek’s Mountaintop Stone Hut

10/10 will stay again

My best friend and I arrived after nightfall and still had a very easy way finding our way to the cabin. Once inside, we found everything we could possibly need for a comfy night stay. Despite the chill outside, the stove kept us very toasty. At first we were bummed we couldn't have a fire outside due to the local fire ban but once we had the lights on and candles lit inside we didn't think twice about it. Shrek's is the coziest, comfiest, best stocked cabin you could possibly want. I couldn't recommend more.

Shrek’s Mountaintop Stone Hut

Staying in the stone hut was so peaceful. It is a great secluded place that allows you to feel immersed in nature. It has so many special touches that make it very charming! The wood stove kept us plenty warm despite it snowing. We loved using the French press to make coffee in the morning! Great stay! We can’t wait to be back!

Magical last minute trip!

Magical last minute book. Such a Beautiful stone hut! Enjoyed the mountain bike route up to the hut with its gorgeous view. I loved working with the potbelly stove for cooking and coffee needs. The supply of cookware is so appreciative when planning the trip. Peak foliage was just about gone but the views didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend earplugs, the critters are very active inside🐭

Fall MTB

Shrek hut is well equipped with everything you need for a night or two in the woods. Bring your sleeping bag and some sort of pillow. Otherwise, you're covered! We cooked over an outdoor fire since the indoor stove gets the hut really warm. We also enjoyed the books provided and brewing up early coffee. Plenty of trails right out the front door. Enjoy!!
