We're a five acre piece of an historic Texas ranch in Southwest San Antonio, just 20-minutes from downtown, sitting along the Medina River. Come for the day or stay the night for some primitive camping. We've got plenty of room for tents, roof-top-tent setups or car/van dry-camping. We’re currently in the building/restoring process, but we’ll have some electrical, drinking water, fire pits, plenty of shade, compost toilets, water in the river, and plenty of good vibes.  Old Herrera Ranch has been in our family since the early 1800's and holds a lot history. A couple of our old buildings, the "jacals", are dated from around the 1830-40's. You'll also see the old "Dance Hall" which is great for hanging out or even some cover if it rains. They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. Old Herrera Ranch - Medina River
No privacy and road noise
Overall not terrible but no privacy. The road is audible at all times and there must be a wedding venue nearby because on both nights an announcer was heard, music, etc. The “dance hall” was nice to charge your phone or speaker if you wanted to. My dogs liked cooling off on the concrete. The river is…not what you would expect. It’s down a huge decline so don’t expect to drive there, tell kids to be very careful, and no one with a physical disability would be able to go down. My frustration came to the campsites, or at least mine, had no privacy to where I could pee comfortably. Mind you my site was surrounded by cacti but even behind the building was visible to other sites. Not really what I had expected and I probably wouldn’t go back.

Not private and noisy.
Overall, our experience was fine but not great. Despite a lot of garbage, the river area is beautiful but it's not visible from camp. The historical buildings are cool but they're all falling apart and most are boarded up. The campsite: We stayed in site #2. It was not as private as we had hoped and there was trash everywhere along with broken tile and glass. While we knew there would be some road noise (from previous reviews), we weren't expecting to be able to see the road from our site (and have the drivers see us). In addition to REALLY loud road noise, the neighboring houses produced a lot of noise. One house in particular had some sort of security alarm that would repeatedly go off all night and there was a lot of loud music day and night from across the river. We were also surprised to find that all of the campsites were very close to each other, offering zero privacy. Site #2 is adjacent to 2 trails leading to/from the river, so other campers were in our camp area pretty regularly. Bathrooms: We don't expect much while camping and we are no strangers to compost toilets. We found the toilet directions to be clear but other campers did not. We had to bag up other people's waste every time we went to use the toilets. Note that there are no working lights in the bathrooms, not a big deal if you have a lantern/head lamp. The doors on the bathrooms are just curtains which would be fine if it weren't for other campers walking by.

Too dusty to sleep on the ground
Dax is a really great guy and we really do love his property. It's actually really cool here when the land is maintained. We came out in February earlier this year and we had a 5-star experience so we were excited to come back for a visit. However this time, we felt very disappointed. We paid almost $100 for two nights to camp here, but ended up leaving early because it was just too uncomfortable to sleep on the ground in a tent given the current conditions of the property. Honestly, it looked like the land hasn't been maintained in a while. Unfortunately, it has been a very dry summer and all the grass is gone at campsite #2 and most of the other sites leaving behind a very fine and dusty ground to sleep on if you are pitching a tent on top of the hill. The wind would just pick up all the dirt and blow it around getting into the tent and on our food. It was impossible to enjoy for me who camps a lot. The tall grass down by the river hasn't been cut in a while so the mosquitos were beyond manageable. I'm from south Texas and I can tolerate mosquitos just fine, but it was so bad I had to make the decision to just pack it up and leave. We didn't stay the night and didn't come back the next night. I recommend waiting to camp here until the property has been addressed and the temperature drops down below 50 (end of mosquito season). There are some really cool features on this property to enjoy, but until it gets some love and attention, I would camp somewhere else for now.

Beautiful property!
Dax is an excellent host who gave perfect instructions about his property! We had an amazing time hiking and exploring the property and enjoyed a nice camp fire in the evening. Excellent view of the stars and the sunset from campsite #2. Only a few minutes drive away from stores like circle K and Dollar General. We would love to stay again.

Must visit!!
Dax has got an awesome place with so much character! Plenty of flat ground to pitch your tent in each spot. During the days we hung out down by the river! Plenty of shade trees and the water felt great. The dance hall provides the perfect place to hang in the evenings. The string lights were a great touch and made it easy to navigate once the sun went down. Dax’s place has got everything that you need and nothing that you don’t! Bring your gear and a good time and it would be really really hard not to enjoy yourself. Happy Camping!!!

The main complaint I have hear is how loud it is. You can hear a nearby highway pretty much 24/7. Really didn't expect that. Otherwise, it was a fairly good, reasonably-priced and easily accessible property. The other campsites were a little bit close but that generally wasn't an issue as there was a lot of space to roam during the day.
