Welcome to Captain Matthew’s Hideaway, where you'll find a secluded beach, hundreds of acres of native bushland, serenity and peace. Located on the Forestier Peninsula facing Norfolk Bay, this spot of paradise was once the site of a convict Probation Station established in 1841. The site is now a completely privately family-owned oasis. If you enjoy swimming, bushwalking, fishing, birdwatching, diving, sunbaking, animal spotting, boating or just generally being outdoors, then Captain Matthew's Hideaway is for you! The glittering V-shaped bay narrows to the mouth of a freshwater creek. Westerly wind waves blowing into the creek mouth have produced a 100m long high tide beach immediately south of the creek mouth, fronted by ridged sand flats that widen to 300 m at the creek mouth. The bay is bordered by eight uniquely designed shacks that are nestled under the shady tree-covered slopes that rise gloriously to over 100m. A vehicle track from the highway terminates close to the beach where your glorious retreat awaits! Please note that all campsites are between 50m - 100m from the beach. Hipcampers are unable to camp closer to this as this is Parks and Wildlife Protected Land. You are more than welcome to enjoy, swim, fish and walk in this area however, it just cannot be camped on. Matthews Hideaway is a conservation area and we ask our wonderful campers to please refrain from feeding/touching/disturbing the abundance of wildlife we have.

Misleading ad
As per review below, the ad is misleading. The camp is not a bush camp, it is surrounded by around 10 private dwellings which are all used by the same family, which was not private and felt awkward to us. Photos of our campsite attached. All other previous Hipcamp experiences / reviews have been positive.

Amazing!!!
Incredible place and equally incredible host’s. Breathtaking views and the coolest waters to wash away the Covid stress, freshen the body and mind. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Great Spot!
Great spot to camp with picturesque views and a historic past. Sid was very accommodating and friendly. Pictures where slightly misleading as to where the camp-site was. Would still recommend to anyone 😄

The perfect Tassie bayside camp.
We loved our stay! We wanted a site for a group of friends away from the normally busy noisy campsites in tassie in summer. We wanted a beach stay that wasn't full of people and my oh my we weren't dissapointed. We had a private and sheltered spot about 50m from the private beach but could set up our chairs and BBQ overlooking the beautiful Bay. We had enough room to set up 2 tents and our caravan plus awnings and a gazebo and we weren't cramped at all. There are other family shacks located on the property and everyone was friendly and welcoming. Sid's communication throughout the booking and stay was outstanding. I understand she is new to hosting here but you wouldn't know. Very professional and accommodating. We really appreciated it. Thanks so much for having us!

The Perfect Hideaway!
Follow the winding gravel track until you arrive at this private paradise. We parked up metres from the shore and got a camp fire going while taking in the views of the pristine wilderness surrounding us. Highly recommend a dip water in the water on a hot day or to wake you up in the morning. It's a seriously stunning location worth checking out!
