This ranch is the home of children's book author Cowgirl Annie. This site is in an abandoned gravel pit so you will be parking on a sandy gravel base. There are cottonwood stands close by that you can hike through to the river. A wide variety of wildlife live in this area, so no telling what you may see or hear. You will have a big area to yourselves. I have tried to plan areas so you won't be disturbed by other campers. Wall Drug and the Badlands National Park are about a twenty-minute drive. You will be camping in an old gravel pit that provides a gravel base so mud will not be an issue. Cottonwood trees are plentiful. and the river is within a short hiking distance. Some wildlife and birds reside in the gravel pit area. You can explore the property at will. The river has Catfish if you want to fish. This ranch is the home of children's book author, Cowgirl Annie. It was also used to film two movies about the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Just what we needed
First, this is the kindest, most considerate host. We drove from Palisades State Park and got in about 7pm. She came right out to greet us and see what we needed and answer questions. This sweet spot was what we needed. After camping in a campground for a week, coming to this peaceful spot was perfect. We just needed a night before heading to Wall Drug, Badlands and then on to Custer. This was the perfect spot for that. Easy on and off 90 and so quiet and calm. We even saw an owl, some deer and lots of stars.

Base camp
We used the gravel pit as a base camp for our trips to Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park and Windcave NP. The host met us to guide us in and was very accommodating. It was a nice area with a pleasant breeze. We camped in the cottonwoods and found level ground for our Hiker Trailer. Mosquito spray/options are a must but it is summer time and that’s life outdoors! We left there and went to Badlands NP and Minuteman Historic Site on our way out. We would stay again if back through the area.

Don’t Let the Name Fool You
Good communication with the friendly host. She checked in on us and made sure we were all set and then left us to relax and enjoy the space. Nice, isolated spot w/a tented toilet nearby. Don’t let the “Gravel Pit” name fool you. It’s got lots of trees and open areas of well grazed grasses to enjoy. We’d certainly visit again.
