Located only 8 miles from Hocking Hills State Park, Altenbrauch Farm features 62 acres of open fields, small streams and wooded hills intersected by a lonely country road.  Aside from our house, there are no neighbors in sight.  Easily pitch your tent in an open field or trek through the hills and hollows to find your perfect campsite. As part of Ohio's famous Hocking Hills Region, Vinton County is home to the second largest state forest, in addition to multiple state parks and wildlife areas. You’ll encounter abandoned historical sites and relics dating back to the early 1800s, hidden away among the wooded hills of Ohio’s least populated county. If you're a lover of outdoor recreation, this is the place to be. Within about a half-hour drive, there are many opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, hunting and fishing, and birding.  Nearby parks and forests include Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking Hills State Forest, Lake Hope State Park, Zaleski State Forest, the Moonville Rail Trail, Lake Alma State Park, Tar Hollow State Forest, and more! Set up camp wherever you like!  There are 12 acres of open field space, surrounded by 50 acres of wooded hills and hollows with hiking trails and level spots to pitch tents. Vehicles can be driven to the field sites; we are still working on a road to access the hill sites by vehicle.  The fields have about a dozen "permanent" sites with stone or metal fire rings and log seating.  Portable fire rings are also available that can be moved anywhere.  Dead wood for campfires is free to gather, or split firewood is available to purchase for $5/bundle. A toilet and solar shower are located at the center of the property. An outdoor water spigot is also available. Guests are expected to follow the "Leave No Trace" principles. Any trash packed onto the property must be bagged and taken with you.Located only 8 miles from Hocking Hills State Park, Altenbrauch Farm's 62-acre property features a mix of open fields, small streams, wooded hills and a lonely country road. Camping in the Hocking Hills
We stayed at Altenbrauch farms for two nights. There was a burn ban due to drought conditions; even with the ban camp was lovely and we had a nice area to ourselves. We did not meet our hosts, but the camp store setup was very nice and check in was easy. The porta-potty was clean and the grounds well-kept. We felt safe and comfortable in the field and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous. It was a perfect home base for our hiking in the Hocking Hills and we would happily stay again.

This was our 5th time booking here and we wouldn’t book any other campsite around Hocking Hills. We love it here!

Camping in the Hocking Hills
Everything was wonderful! We can't wait to come back. The kids were planning our next trip before we even left. We didn't explore the more primitive campsites but there wasn't a lot of traffic on the road at all.

Camping in the Hocking Hills
Lots of room and very private
We've been HipCamping for a while now, and most places have things you love and things you'd change even if they were an overall positive experience. That's how we felt here - mostly great and a few things we'd change! One thing we would change is knowing ahead of time that it is WAY better to get to Bray Hollow Road from Goose Creek Road rather than directly from 23! The road between the farm and 23 has not been maintained well, and has several very high spots in the middle of the road. The other direction, toward Goose Creek Road is great. Once you're at the property, which is very clearly marked on Bray Hollow Road, turn in where it says 'check in' to find the bathroom, shower, and kiosk where additional information can be found including maps of the sites. We were a bit nervous to turn in here as it had been raining and the grass was long, but the ground was firm and fine to drive on. When we were checking in we were greeted by a friendly but untrained dog that jumped all over me. It wasn't threatening, but I had to change clothes due to being covered in mud and dog slobber. The things that were great included really nice and roomy sites of which there were many to choose from. Each had a fire pit and nice logs to sit on. We found our spot, set up, and never saw a soul. From our camp site it took 20 minutes to drive to Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center.

Camping in the Hocking Hills
Lovely sites along a dry creek bed. I was there after a months’ long summer drought. Enjoyed the night sounds in the hollow. Appreciated the solar shower and clean porta potty.

Camping in the Hocking Hills
A nice base camp
We stayed at Altenbrauch farms (mother and teenage daughter with our dog) for two nights. The creek was dry and there was a burn ban due to drought conditions, but that’s nature and was not the owner’s fault. We were given the option to cancel without penalty when the ban went into effect, but it was right before our trip started and we were committed, so we went with it. I did pay for firewood while reserving, though, so it was a little disappointing to be unable to use it. Even with the ban, though, camp was lovely. We had the whole lower field to ourselves and there was one other camper in the middle field for one of our two nights there. We did not meet our hosts, but the camp store setup was very nice and check in was easy. The porta-potty was clean and the grounds well-kept. We felt safe and comfortable in the field and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous. It was a perfect home base for our hiking and river trip in the Hocking Hills and we would happily stay again (hopefully when the water is higher) in the future.
