A lush woodland setting, great facilities and a delightful town just a stroll away

Bang in the wooded heartland of the Perigord, Huttopia’s Sarlat Les Perieres site is as well-situated as it is brilliantly equipped, occupying a beautiful woodland location just a 10-minute walk from the medieval market town of Sarlat. What's more, the site has been completely renovated in recent years, boasting a whole host of excellent facilities spread beneath the trees. The highlights include two heated (indoor and outdoor) swimming pools, a sauna, a brand-new play area for children and tennis, volleyball and petanque courts.

Accommodation at Huttopia’s Sarlat is varied too. Pitches for tents, campervans and caravans are large and relatively secluded, all with electricity and water, and there's also a selection of pre-erected safari-style tents, gypsy caravans and two kinds of mobile home. They're spread evenly around, with space to kick back and relax. The main lodge acts as a central convening space, with its own lounge area, café-restaurant and a small shop at reception.

Really you could spend a week here and barely leave the site, but with so much beautiful countryside on your doorstep that would be a pity. There's magnificent walking to be enjoyed on the footpaths of Perigord Noir and you can also canoe down the Dordogne and Vezere rivers – the various river beaches which line their banks are perfect for reclining after a spot of wild swimming. Some of the region's most spectacular castles and caves are just a short drive away, while Sarlat itself is the epitome of a handsome small French town, with a lively weekly market and any number of nice places to eat, drink and make merry.

Being a part of the Huttopia 'brand' does mean this is one of multiple campsites spread across the country but it still lacks that gaudy commercial feel you might worry about. For a full-service family campsite in the Dordogne region we think Huttopia Sarlat ticks almost every box.

Camping pitch with electricity
Walk into Sarlat.
Near to beautiful Sarlat, BUT a strenuous walk back up to the campsite. Reception said that taxis will not return you if you walk down into Sarlat. Beutiful pool.

Camping pitch with electricity
When we arrived in our motorhome we were given pitch 7. It was very small and very shaded and near the pool despite our pre-booking info giving our MH size and staying that as two adults without children we didn’t need to be close. We were very impressed at how our complaint was handled, and another two pitches were offered If travelling with children the site would be perfect, but we found it just a little too commercial for our needs and felt we were paying for things we didn’t use. The showers and washing machines were all good and clean and the little bar sold very tasty pizzas and pain au raisin. The walk into Sarlat was a slight uphill all the way back which may have been hard on a very hot day. We chose it for its proximity to Sarlat, which was a beautiful city to visit. We probably wouldn’t visit this site again unless with our family, but would certainly recommend for families.

Really friendly well run professional camping. Nice big pool not too crowded even at the peak (a little on the cold side - and very deep), little indoor pool, tennis court and pétanque. Area for football. Terraced site surrounded by woods where you can hear the dawn chorus and owls at night. Excellent shower blocks, decent spacing. We had two tents, 6 kids, 2 adults ages 8-16 and they liked the freedom. Brought bikes though a bit hilly for that except the fittest. Nice bar and food though pricey, some activities going on in French. Would recommend.

Immaculate shower/loo blocks and friendly staff but it's a huge, sprawling place on the side of a hill and it's all very impersonal.

Camp just a stone’s throw from the medieval town of Sarlat amid 13 hectares of nature and enjoy the heated pool! Huttopia Sarlat is a lush woodland campsite in central France that's just a walk away from the delightful town of Sarlat La Caneda. Camp on a beautiful pitch in the heart of a magnificent woodland site, organised into terraces and with fully renovated washrooms. In the summer, the Huttopia Sarlat campsite organizes a simple and friendly activity programme, giving you the chance to join in some great activities on the campsite and discover the region. At the Pizza-grill you can have a drink on the terrace or enjoy a delicious homemade pizza or find somewhere nice to eat in Sarlat – the reception team is at your disposal throughout your stay to communicate all the tourist information about the old town and its surroundings. The best way to enjoy the region is from the river: hire a canoe or opt for an excursion in a gabare, a traditional local boat, to admire the prestigious castles of the Périgord from the Dordogne river. Or enjoy a relaxing break at one of the many beaches along the Dordogne at Carsac Aillac (9 km), Castelnaud (13 km), La Roque Gageac (13 km), St Vincent de Cosse (14 km) and St Julien de Lampon (17 km).
Nearby attractions
Sarlat is a beautiful medieval town by any standards, capital of the Perigord and a delightful mix of narrow streets and large, honey-coloured mansions. But the river Dordogne holds the region's real treasures: follow the river beyond Sarlat to the fortified towns of Beynac, whose castle perches high above the river, Castelnaud (0033 5 5331 3000) and Roque Gageac, all of which are worth a visit. Further afield, touristy Rocamadour (0033 5 6533 2200) is even more spectacular, while the caves at Padirac (0033 5 6533 6456) and Lascaux are also within easy driving distance. You could see some of the best spots along the river by canoe; and don't think that being so far from the sea means you can't go for a swim: there are beaches on the river at Carsac-Aillac (9km away), La Roque- Gageac (13km) and at Castelnaud (also 13km away).
Food and drink
There's a daily bread service providing fresh baguettes and croissants each morning, and a café-restaurant (open July and August) serving drinks, snacks and homemade pizzas. For eating out, Sarlat has plenty of good cafés and restaurants – try the tiny Bistrot L'Adresse (0033 5 5330 5619), which is a proper locals' restaurant, popular with families, or the hearty portions at Chez le Gaulois (0033 5 5359 5064).
