Back to the basics, come and experience Tar River Life’s primitive camping on the Tar River. Enjoy being on the river and listening to slow running sound of the Tar River. Bring your own tent or rent one of ours. You can drive your vehicle to all of our campsites. The drive to camp is about 1/2 miles. Each site includes a fire pit, wood and trash bin. Cook your own meals or try and catch your own fish from the river. Campsites can be secluded or grouped. Each site comes with a picnic table, 1 bundle of wood and trash can. Stay for a night or longer period of time, come and enjoy the outdoors with us. We have lots of walking trails, fishing access, wildlife, kayaking and tubing (must be purchased through us). 2WD vehicles are ok except during wet conditions. There is also the Vollmer Farm, with seasonal produce a Full Coffee Shop with breakfast goodies and baked goods and not to mention their fabulous ice cream. They have goods from around NC including, eggs, honey, meats, beers, wine and more. There is a grocery store (Food Lion) about 15 minutes away. So you can stock up on supplies on your way to your next adventure. We are pet friendly!

Tar River Tent Camping(1-3 tents)
Great place to camp! Sites were well maintained and private; we happened to have the place to ourselves (which was awesome), but you could not see other campsites from your own site if there had been others. Hosts were very friendly and accommodating; they offered their high ground site to us if we needed it because the river was high from recent storms, but thankfully the water went down by the time we arrived and we enjoyed our original spot by the river. Did not tube or swim like we had hoped to because the water was churned up/muddy from the storms, but would love to come back and try that when it clears up! My dog had no issue swimming and playing in the water from our beautiful site. No running water anywhere, but it looked like each site had their own outdoor toilet. I drive a lifted SUV, so we had a blast coming and going, but I imagine the road might be a little rough for a sedan. Being on the water, I also definitely recommend bug spray, etc. Overall, we really loved this place and hope to come back in the near future!

The best camping spot EVER!!!!!
It was a very peaceful camping spot right on a creek bed that provided enough space where we weren’t sleeping on top of one another. It was also nice that there was enough space between campsites where we didn’t have to worry about bothering other campers. The commodities were nice and although it was hot out a fire was the perfect way to end the night.

My wife and I had an amazing time at our campsite. We had site 7 which had a lot of shade and a nice breeze. It was perfect site for the summer. The hosts were great and checked up on us at least once a day.

Dirty river but awesome campground
Note, this not a self-check in location and host will contact you ahead of your stay to sign a waiver and you’ll meet with host to gain entry to the campground the day of your reservation. We camped for 1 night on a weekday, so we had the place all to ourselves and my dogs loved exploring freely and swimming in the Tar River. Unfortunately, both dogs did get sick after drinking from this river (which appeared pretty polluted), so please keep an eye on your pets as the water isn’t safe to drink. Across the river from the campground is a golf course, so you’ll occasionally hear chatter and noise coming from the golfers (balls hit, carts whirring). There is no cell signal, so be prepared to unplug and unwind. Overall, I would recommend this Hipcamp as the sites and amenities are lovely, but I would not allow my pets to swim in the river for safety purposes.

Loved that we were spread out from other campers. It was so nice to have wood there when we arrived, and we loved tying our tubes to the bank and floating right by our campsite. The potty tents were great too!
