Wildhorse Overlook
We made the best of our time at the overlook, but it was not an ideal situation for our group.
The Cons:
- Completely exposed campsite with no shade protection (very difficult in the 100-degree July heat)
- Shelter included in photos is inaccessible to guests
- Previous guests have left used toilet paper on the hillside
- Noise from the highway
- The listing says you can walk the lake, we were not able to find any walkable lake entrance, and the host was not responsive to our messages
The Pros
- Beautiful views
- Solid picnic table
Maybe this would work for other groups, or at other times of the year, but if you are looking to tent camp near Flathead Lake with easy access to the lake, look elsewhere.

Expensive for what you get
Honestly, this spot wasn't terrible, but here is the reason for the bad review and why we left a day early (when we had paid for 2):
$170 for 2 nights for this:
-Next to a very loud and busy highway.
-NO TOILET and no water (which we knew about a head of time, but the cost of the site is WAY too high for what it is/didn't have to offer).
-TERRIBLE amount of ants (around 50 all over our tent)!
-Something should be mentioned that Dayton doesn't really have any services (gas, firewood, ice, etc.).
-Flathead lake in general is not good for the public to use- it is for those who have property here and a BOAT. Only 4 fishing accesses (which should've just said 4 boat ramps) around the majority of the largest lake in Montana (pretty ridiculous). Not much to do if you don't drink alcohol (too cold of water to swim and no where to fish), on top of the fact that you won't be able to pee in private during the day.
Again, I realize that the utilization of this recreational area (the lake) are not the host's fault, but the pricing and what is offered IS. I suggest that this site goes for about $25/night and not a penny more- that's about what it's worth.
The positives were that it IS a great view, it does have a nice picnic table and fire ring, and you do get the site all to yourself, but note that you CAN see the owner's house (so you don't really feel alone... if that makes sense).

The she'd was locked. I reached out to owner with no response. Wind storm came in and took my pop up tent and tent since we weren't able tp store gear to wait out the storm. Tons of road noise from the highway.
