This old homestead belonged to my belated uncle Steve, and after he passed unexpectedly, I had returned to Minnesota from California and wanted to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for those interested in sharing a peaceful and modest property. The old barn is a work in progress to eventually become the base to accommodating more travelers and outdoor enthusiasts as finances permit. After working in the service industry bartending for 14 years and hosting 100+ global travelers via CouchSurfing out of San Diego, I am well versed in creating an inviting space, it has been a fulfilling endeavor. We look forward to meeting you and sharing/swapping stories around the campfire! Learn more about this land: Our property and profile are in constant change as we are in a stage of development, but we look to share our land with those seeking to enjoy a warm, welcome environment for those fellow wanderers, outdoor enthusiasts, vagabonds, and globetrotters. I am a well-traveled backpacker myself and share 5 1/2 acres with my father here in a bustling little touristy town. We enjoy the company of those who endorse small footprint, sustainable practices and like to establish meaningful connections.  All we ask is that you respect the property, our neighbors, and make an effort to add one more new friend before you depart.

Excellent Escape!
We had a fantastic stay with David and Logan. The entire place was well-cared for and full of unexpected small pleasure: heat in our teepee, bumper pool in the barn, super-fast Wi-Fi. We had wonderful conversation around the fire each evening of our stay - thanks David for the book! I’m loving it! And we slept so well and warm in the teepee, despite freezing temperatures each night. We knew very little about the area and learned during our stay that Detroit Lakes is a really special spot. Located one hour from Fargo and one hour from the Mississippi Headwaters, Tumbleweed Base camp was perfect for our needs. Thanks for your generosity and hospitality.

Charming Northwoods Farmstead
Tent · With kids ·
David and Logan's farm was beautiful. Very clean and well-maintained, set up nicely for families. They had all the amenities we needed - fire ring, wood, picnic table, and potable water. We tent camped at the bottom of a little open meadow. They've also renovated a 100-year old barn into a fun game room/social area that is quite charming. We had the place to ourselves to enjoy the fall weather and leaves, a perfect 'base camp' for our expedition to see the Trolls art installation in Detroit Lakes. David and Logan were accommodating and gracious hosts. We'd recommend and go back.

Peaceful and convenient base camp
4 m campervan ·
Tumbleweed was the perfect "base camp" for our weekend getaway. We biked right from our campsite to the fun, flowy and fast MTB trails at Detroit Mountain and had a blast. The trip into town to search for trolls was quick and easy. And the property itself is beautiful and quiet. We savored the starry nights and peaceful feeling. Our only disappointment is that the weather was too nice and we didn't get to experience all the delights the barn has on offer. We'll have to come back for a snowy or rainy weekend so we can play ping pong with David!

Nice property, some privacy and wooded sites. Both David and his son Logan were warm and welcoming.
