Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.  We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.  It was once an abandoned house that sat for years, until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale.  We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!  Just down the road is a trout stream and just beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired it's horses and closed it's doors to make room for new homes,  but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.  This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

We had such a wonderful weekend at the Canvas Cottage. The hosts made sure that everything was taken care of. The site has so much charm. We cannot recommend Balsam Ridge enough. We will be back next year.

The Roost
I cannot recommend staying with Linda and Chris enough. My girlfriend and I stayed in the Roost for a short getaway, and we were blessed with a clean and cozy cabin, a lovely porch, lit paths, and a location secluded from the rest of the city. Though it's located just a couple miles outside the city, it truly feels like a small little paradise, with a few fun little games to try out on the property, a couple rope swings, and nature all around. The hospitality is unmatched, Linda and Chris are very clearly incredibly passionate about their property and being incredible hosts, I highly recommend getting to know them on your stay here. My girlfriend became my fiancée here in The Roost, and I could not have imagined a more perfect and romantic place than a small hut that used to house chickens to propose to my partner. My fiancée and I will be coming back probably everytime we visit Duluth. If you're looking for a cheap, romantic, and cozy outing, I couldn't imagine a better place.

The Canvas Cottage
Privacy and a Hammock!
I loved Canvas Cottage at Balsam Ridge Retreat. Linda and Chris are fantastic hosts. Canvas Cottage is nestled into a wooded site the gives utmost privacy. It has a queen bed with a good mattress and two outside lounge chairs. Inside is a rocker, and you can look out the big screened windows for a great view. The most important though is the hammock! Fantastic. I also enjoyed spending time on the "Back Porch" the communal area by the pond.

The Canvas Cottage
The Canvas Cottage
This was my second time staying here at Balsam Ridge Retreat, and it was just as great as the first time!! The Canvas Cottage was cozy and despite the chilly weather that we had while we were there, we were kept warm with the heated mattress pad that they provided. The best part about this site was definitely the little porch that the site had and the hammock! Chris and Linda were, once again, such amazing hosts!! They were super kind and quick to help if need be!

The Mini Coop
Wow! Linda and Chris have created and curated a slice of paradise right here in Duluth! Their attention to detail and vision for rest is truly amazing. The Mini Coop was just perfect! Perfect for one-person. I was very grateful for the electric kettle so that I could make a cup of coffee without having to make a fire. Linda and Chris are extraordinarily friendly and are very good conversationalists. I'm just sorry that I had to leave a day earlier than I thought, but I'll be back!
