"It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that it makes life worth living." David Attenborough We've been about a greener lifestyle for decades--before green was "popular," before building tiny houses was the "trend," and before living a freer life off-the-grid was "a thing". Our mission is to provide an environmentally sustainable getaway where you will encounter off-the-grid living first hand for that unique experience. In the beautiful backdrop of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan (U.P.), we've built a sustainable, off-grid retreat where you can design your own personal EcoXtreme adventure. Enjoy this back-country timber- frame haven among a forest of birch and pine, next to the magical flow of the Montreal River, and surrounded by a cornucopia of recreational offerings. Extreme skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, sailing, surfing, and scuba are just a few of the exploits available. The Copper Cabin was ranked among the TOP 10 locations in the nation to enjoy the outdoors in 2020 ** and 3rd Best US Hipcamp Cabin stay 2022, and Best Hipcamp to Visit in Michigan 2023 Runner Up. The Copper Cabin is a completely self-contained off-grid hideaway situated just feet off the Montreal River in a pine and birch forest teaming with wildlife. Once you leave the road and the ATV/Snowmobile trail, you'll drive the two-track (or snowshoe) to the footbridge crossing the river and travelling by foot on up to the cabin in the woods. * This is a real wilderness destination that is not for everyone, but perfect for the adventurous spirit. Experience this comfy eco-friendly timber-framed abode complete with solar lighting, wood burning stove, convenient 12-volt refrigerator, indoor composting toilet, 12-volt entertainment center, water catchment/filter/dispenser system, antique gas cook top (sorry no oven) & more. Two large sleeping lofts have 1 queen bed, 1 double bed, and two futons. The space can accommodate up to 8 people and makes a restful getaway. The morning is welcomed in with views from the large Eastern window. There is a sauna/bath house currently under construction, but operational. Outdoor solar-lighted composting privy adds a second convenient toilet. Thimbleberry, blueberry mingle along with Verbena, Astor, wild strawberry, and Lobelia along the forest floor and fringes. Miles and miles of flora and fauna for your nature-loving self. Biking, hiking, snowshoeing, wildlife watching, hunting and brook-trout are all within steps of the covered rustic porch. Weber grill, fire ring with grill and picnic table invite you to the great outdoors where you can catch the Northern Lights in the super star-studded night sky. In the winter, the trees are dripping snowy frosting and paint this wonderland in opalescent beauty. You won't want to leave. But there's so much in the area to customize your adventure--world-class skiing at Mount Bohemia, single-track biking in Copper Harbor and Calumet, kayaking, scuba, surfing, kite surfing, sailing, hiking, etc--so you'll want to plan time to venture out, or just plan your next adventure at the Copper Cabin. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION. This is a true backcountry / wilderness experience,  with the inherent risks of wilderness travel. Sometimes the grass gets long, there is wildlife, the snow gets DEEP, and you're definitely a long way from room service -- but we believe that's part of the draw and what really shapes this unique experience. We do not offer grounds-keeping, linen nor cleaning service. Our friends at the Marquette Hampton Hilton do. Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly.  * Travel from base camp to bridge is approximately 3/4 mile. Travel from Bridge to cabin is approximately 1/4 mile. The snow gets deep here and, therefore, can create a challenge to enter and exit Base Camp during a big dump. Please be prepared with an appropriate 4x4 vehicle, and to use a shovel, just as you would if you were in the mountains out west. We do accept a 2-day minimum stay, but we try to check every first-time guest in personally. When we do, we make a round trip of 14 hrs and it would be helpful if you would consider a 3-day or more stay. **Bisma Parvez, Detroit Free PressPublished 3:24 p.m. ET Jan. 16, 2020 | Updated 6:18 a.m. ET Jan. 17, 2020

The Copper Cabin
A True Hidden Gem
This cabin is a dream. Beautiful, remote, just what we wanted to celebrate a birthday. Darryl was so helpful giving us the rundown and we sure made the most of it. We hope to visit again someday.

The Copper Cabin
Amazing Getaway
The Copper Cabin was the perfect venue for us to have a romantic getaway for our 32nd anniversary. The cabin is wonderfully appointed and cozy, rustic, yet held modern conveniences such as solar power, and an indoor composting toilet. (The toilet is in a bathroom with a door… And does not smell up the cabin!) The separate sauna was a lovely amenity which we took advantage of several times during our stay. It is cute and quirky with the eye window and other quaint touches in the design, as are many aspects of the cabin itself ! Linda and Darryl are amazing hosts and we look forward to returning, maybe even being bold enough to visit for a winter adventure!

The Copper Cabin
I loved this cabin, it’s so charming! Very private and rustic but with enough amenities to make it a much more comfortable experience than tent camping. Linda did a great job of explaining how everything works as well!

Great Keweenaw Base Camp!
Linda and Darryl's off-grid cabin provided a cozy, warm, dry, and well-stocked dwelling, complete with peaceful forest sounds, the beautiful Montreal River, and privacy. It was the perfect base camp from which to explore the Keweenaw Peninsula for a long weekend!

For our UP trip it was very central! You are secluded but 30 minutes away from anything you may need!

The Copper Cabin
A Place of Peace
We loved our stay at the Copper Cabin! We can't wait to come back! I'm a single mom who brought her two daughters (ages 11 and 13) and 2 dogs. I wanted to bring them all out i nature, away from computers, noise, and the busyness of the city. This was perfect! I loved that we had to hike in because it added some challenge, mystery and adventure and I loved that it was a solar powered and environmentally friendly cabin. The area was beautiful and peaceful and the cabin was so cozy and inviting. Coming from the city, it was rustic enough to make it feel like we were in nature having a glamping experience rather then a hotel or resort experience. It had a sink, but not with running water, you have to pump the water by hand. It had a toilet but a composting toilet and urinal. You could brew coffee, but with a Moka Pot. There were no showers, but a creek nearby that you could bath in if you needed to. It had heat but with a wood burning stove and so on. My daughters had fun with the new challenges of hiking in, grinding coffee, learning how to use a Moka Pot, pumping water, using a composting toilet, hiking on the trails nearby with the dogs collecting blackberries, trying a wood burning stove on a chilly rainy night while cooking homemade soup on the old, gas oven, and using an ax to cut wood. They got in full Pioneer women mode and pretended to be living on Little House on the Prarie. 😄 Great location! So much to explore nearby! I'm so glad places like this exsist! Thank you!
