Our mission is to provide an environmentally sustainable getaway where you will encounter off-the-grid living first hand for that unique experience. In the beautiful backdrop of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan (U.P.), we've built a sustainable, off-grid retreat where you can design your own personal EcoXtreme adventure. Enjoy this back-country timber- frame haven among a forest of birch and pine, next to the magical flow of the Montreal River, and surrounded by a cornucopia of recreational offerings. The Copper Cabin is a completely self-contained off-grid hideaway situated just feet off the Montreal River in a pine and birch forest teaming with wildlife. Once you leave the road and the ATV/Snowmobile trail, you'll drive the two-track (or snowshoe) to the footbridge crossing the river and travelling by foot on up to the cabin in the woods. * This is a real wilderness destination that is not for everyone, but perfect for the adventurous spirit. Experience this comfy eco-friendly timber-framed abode complete with solar lighting, wood burning stove, convenient 12-volt refrigerator, indoor composting toilet, 12-volt entertainment center, water catchment/filter/dispenser system, antique gas cook top (sorry no oven) & more. Two large sleeping lofts have 1 queen bed, 1 double bed, and two futons. The space can accommodate up to 8 people and makes a restful getaway. The morning is welcomed in with views from the large Eastern window. There is a sauna/bath house currently under construction, but operational. Outdoor solar-lighted composting privy adds a second convenient toilet. Thimbleberry, blueberry mingle along with Verbena, Astor, wild strawberry, and Lobelia along the forest floor and fringes. Miles and miles of flora and fauna for your nature-loving self. Biking, hiking, snowshoeing, wildlife watching, hunting and brook-trout are all within steps of the covered rustic porch. Weber grill, fire ring with grill and picnic table invite you to the great outdoors where you can catch the Northern Lights in the super star-studded night sky. In the winter, the trees are dripping snowy frosting and paint this wonderland in opalescent beauty. You won't want to leave. But there's so much in the area to customize your adventure--world-class skiing at Mount Bohemia, single-track biking in Copper Harbor and Calumet, kayaking, scuba, surfing, kite surfing, sailing, hiking, etc--so you'll want to plan time to venture out, or just plan your next adventure at the Copper Cabin. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION. This is a true backcountry / wilderness experience, with the inherent risks of wilderness travel. Sometimes the grass gets long, there is wildlife, the snow gets DEEP, and you're definitely a long way from room service -- but we believe that's part of the draw and what really shapes this unique experience. We do not offer grounds-keeping, linen nor cleaning service. Our friends at the Marquette Hampton Hilton do. Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly. * Travel from base camp to bridge is approximately 3/4 mile. Travel from Bridge to cabin is approximately 1/4 mile. The snow gets deep here and, therefore, can create a challenge to enter and exit Base Camp during a big dump. Please be prepared with an appropriate 4x4 vehicle, and to use a shovel, just as you would if you were in the mountains out west. We do accept a 2-day minimum stay, but we try to check every first-time guest in personally. There is a footbridge that you will need to cross with your pet.

Pump or well. Water Catchment System with cistern hand pump. Stainless water filtration system for drinking water.

Cooking equipment present

Grill over firepit, bbq, stovetop or hot plate, fridge, cookware, cooking utensils, dishware, cutlery, basic seasoning and oils, sink or other dishwashing station. We have a fully equipped kitchen as well as a gas grill, a Weber grill (bring your own charcoal), and a grill grate over fire pit.

Bathe in river or stream. Nearby Mount Bohemia's Nordic Spa has showers as well as a full spa, bar, and wood-fired pizza served poolside.

There is NO vehicle access to the Copper Cabin. In the summer you can get close to the footbridge by car. From the bridge, it is 1/4 mile walk. In the winter, you will park at Base Camp. From there it is a 1-mile snowshoe in. 4WD is HIGHLY recommended as well as carrying a shovel and tow-strap as you should in any mountain travel.

With kids

We loved the beautiful hike in! The cabin had everything we needed and then some. Very comfortable! The sauna was lovely. Our kids ages 6 and 9 had so much fun! All instructions to get to the cabin and get settled were easy to follow.

We had such a beautiful stay here at the Copper Cabin. The snowshoe in was quite the trek with the recent snow, but having sleds and snowshoes available to use at basecamp were super helpful! Darryl and Linda were gracious hosts all throughout with great communication on how to access everything. Proximity to Mt. Bohemia was perfect. Went skiing at the end of the road in Copper Harbor and spent a lot of 'winter daydream' down-time watching snow fall at the cabin too. Will be back.

Skiers Winter Adventure

This was a new winter adventure for my life long friend and skiing partner and me! There was ALOT of snow!!! It was like snow shoeing into Narnia! We were pleasantly surprised that the cabin was warm when we got there! The cabin was amazing, just as it looks in the pictures! We weren’t able to get the fire going in the sauna as we were unable to split the wood into small enough pieces. And we had some difficulty with the fire the first night due to the wood being wet, but once it got burning hot enough it was good and toasty! Overall it was a great winter adventure! We felt pretty accomplished that we were able to “Rough it” in the winter! We even had the pleasure of meeting Linda at Mt. Bohemia that week! The snow and skiing was Epic! Thank you Linda and Darryl for sharing this beautiful place!

Amazing stay at Copper Cabin-again

This is our 4th winter stay at the Eco-Extreme Cabin. Amazing snow this year in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Had some great XC skiiing and snowshoeing. A well-trod path through the snow to the cabin & easily accessed sleds to bring our food & gear in. Wood stove kept us cozy in the cabin and nice & warm in the loft at night (0 degrees outside, toasty in the loft). Everything was beautiful & peaceful. In spite of all of the snow (24" + on the ground when we arrived, another 10"+ fell during our stay), getting in & out & around is no problem. Roads & area where our car was parked were plowed repeatedly. Took in the spa at Mt Bohemia, & the sauna at Takka Superior on Lake Superior near Eagle Harbor. Always love to stop in at Keweenaw Coffee Works in Calumet. Can't wait for the next visit!!

Copper Cabin

This cabin is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. What a wilderness gem this place is! Once there, I didn't want to leave and go back to "normal life".
