Camping and glamping among the forest of the southern Ardèche region in South East France

Sud Ardèche is one of multiple Huttopia sites spread across France. It is run by logo-bearing staff, has a heated swimming pool, organized children’s activities and an on-site restaurant. It all sounds a little holiday-park-ish doesn’t it?

The reality is quite the opposite. Don’t expect strips of tarmac and mown lawns here. Huttopia Sud Ardèche is an entirely natural camping space; complete with all its lumps, bumps and overgrown tree stumps. Footpaths are worn into the ground, weaving around the site, and the best pitches can’t even be reached in your car. Instead you bob beneath branches and make your way to various forest clearings, irregularly shaped patches where you can erect your tent.

For the most ‘wild’ experience, pitches at the far end of the woods don’t have electricity, but there are still spots closer to the entrance suitable for campervans and motorhomes – they have electrical hook-ups and wooden picnic benches for you to use. There are also a variety of eco-friendly glamping options, beautifully built from French-grown Douglas fir. They range from two-person wood and canvas tents, with double beds and some basic furnishings, to the largest six-person cabins that have separate bedrooms, kitchens and living spaces.

It’s kids who are most at home. Camping among the trees provides an added element of adventure while the plethora of facilities still mean comforts are always at hand: board games on rainy days, a shallow paddling pool for when the sun’s out and a well-equipped outdoor playground. It may not have that personal touch of an owner-run, small-scale campsite but it’s still a far cry from Euro-park monstrosities. For camping in the woods, Huttopia is just the ticket.

Canadienne tent
We are a family of 4 with 2 boys aged 10 and 12 and this was our first experience of a Huttopia Village. Our Canadienne Tent had everything we would need for our week living in the woods which was great because it meant we could pack light for the long drive down. It even had a fridge. Our accommodation was very comfortable both outside the tent and in. We spent most of our evenings on the decking area, eating and drinking and reading. playing games or gazing up at the clear star-filled skies above us through the tree canopy. One small criticism here is that our tent was located near the road which we found quite noisy at night. However, we did notice that the road noise was muffled by the hillside on the other side of the camp. We made full use of the resorts facilities and activities, including the pool, archery and guided walks. We also took in the Festival de Feu which was spectacular. Our only criticism here is that some of the communications were a bit misleading. Timings of events were sometimes changed at the last minute and the minimum age for the electric scooters and bikes we were told was 12 rather than 10 which was what it said in the documentation. This of course disappointed my youngest son. While the resort staff speak good English, many of the activities staff do not. Fortunately for us we understand some French so that was not a problem but we did notice others struggle a little. If you are going to travel that far then you will be missing out if you stay in the resort all week. There is of course a big Intermarche in Vallon which has everything you might need and the town main street is worth an amble through. A bit further a field there are countless little villages defiinitely worth exploring. The main event of the week for us was a 12km kayak down the Ardeche Gorge and under the famous Arc. We used the company recommended by Huttopia and you get 10% off for booking through them. We would recommend in the height of summer to go down it early in the morning or late in the evening as the river can get quite crowded. Also if the water levels are low it is a bit of a bump and scrape down the river. Its still worth the trip though as the gorge is spectacular. All in all we had a fantastic holiday and we would definitely recommend Huttopia Sud-Ardeche

Huttopia Sud Ardèche is a little corner of paradise located in the heart of one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Ardèche. Enjoy a unique stay in this holiday village with swimming pools in the south of the wonderful region of Ardèche. Just outside the Ardèche Gorges, close to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Barjac, Huttopia Sud Ardèche Village awaits you for an unforgettable experience on an extraordinary, unspoilt site laid out in natural terraces! The ideal base camp for exploring the treasures of the Ardèche… On site, you can admire the beauty of the nature all around you from the pool complex or the forest spa and take advantage of a programme of activities included with your holiday, as well as a friendly central lodge and a wide range of facilities…
Nearby attractions
The campsite is 5km from the Pont d'Arc, a natural bridge, located at the entrance to the Ardèche Gorges and now an unmissable symbol of the Ardèche region. You'll see it on all the postcards. From just outside the campsite you can descend the Ardèche Gorges by canoe or kayak. Several routes exist, but all the locals recommend the 24km one. You can grab all the information from reception or pop into the Vallon Pont d'Arc Tourist Office (0033 4 7588 0401). By Vallon Pont d'Arc there is also a magnificent cave Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche (0033 4 7594 3940) – a prehistoric site discovered in 1994 with ancient wall engravings.
Food and drink
The café-restaurant opens for breakfast or you can order fresh bread and pastries the evening before, collect it in the morning and eat it back at the tent. Meals generally start at around €10 and there are freshly made pizzas along with grilled meats. The outside terrace has fantastic views. BBQs are available for anyone to use in the communal areas dotted around the site.
