Welcome to old Hawaii, the village of Koae, Big Island, Hawaii! Our forest features 12 old mangos and 50 types of tropical fruit. The 6 acres includes Josanna's Organic garden, a WWOOF farm experience. This space has hosted thousands of people over it's 45 year history and we welcome people to our island and to the district of Puna. We look forward to introducing you to the diverse and delicious fruits of the jungle!
This campsite offers a serene retreat in the heart of the jungle, with lush surroundings and a warm, welcoming atmosphere created by Janelle and her team. Visitors frequently praise the peacefulness, the unique outdoor shower experience, and the opportunity to interact with friendly farm animals. However, some guests note the presence of jungle sounds at night and potential encounters with local wildlife like roosters and insects. Overall, it's a delightful spot for those looking to experience nature up close in a rustic setting.
Janelle was so kind and we felt at home right away. The setting was rustic but still had everything we needed and we enjoyed the complimentary fruit from the farm in the morning. Would stay there again if we’re coming that way!
Showed up to the site and was yelled at by the extremely rude host that she was not ready and we needed to leave. We had already paid and still have not received our full refund. We are born and raised on the big island and can tell you there are many nicer hosts to stay with and avoid this place at all costs. They have no Aloha. Definitely not “namaste”.
If you can , rent from locals and not mainlanders who use our culture for greed and treat locals poorly.
Beautiful artwork in a private room. Private cooking facilities and access to shared bathroom facilities including hot showers on demand. Access to fruit stand that is well stocked with local fruit and vegetable varieties grown on site. Surrounded by well-maintained landscaping.
Lovely place. Well kept up. Beautiful jungle place. Stores and things to do are about a 20 min car ride away.
The farm hands and host Janelle are very nice and helpful.
We stayed in the farmhouse at the Hawaiian Retreat. Janelle was a great host! It was pouring rain when we arrived and she walked us back to our cabin. We also woke up to a beautiful fruit and vegetable basket the next day. The cabin was clean and tidy, has a mini kitchen (no frig, has cooler though), dining area with big family style table, 2 large rooms separated by door and 4 beds total (2 twins, a queen and a full). Shower was attached to outside of cabin with hot water heater. The bathrooms (toilet and sink) were a short walk away in view of the cabin. Overall, everything was in livable condition. Somethings to note: There are no privacy shades on windows in cabin (probably to keep air flowing through, had no issues with this but something to be aware of). There was wifi but low signal during our stay (probably due to the weather). It's located in a rain forest environment, off grid, with animals (boars, cats, etc.) in the vicinity. Beautiful land and surroundings with a nice drive in. Hope you enjoy your stay like we did!
