Camp Kapanaia
Best Hipcamp in north Hawaii!
We are repeat customers at this Hipcamp. 👍🏾
There is now a proper flushing toilet (in privacy stall) and an enclosed shower with hot water!

Great spot! Awesome view!
The property is a little hard to find, but worth the effort. Luke was very helpful and polite. The property is on a couple anchors with a view if the ocean. He recently put in, showers (hot water), flushing toilet.
As far as directions, i used the directions on Apple Maps from the app and made it their. Make sure u get the lock code prior. I ended up at the front gate and found Luke’s phone number and called him. A little more responsive on phone, rather than messaging.
Additionally, there is a great surf spot under 1 mile from the property. Definitely will return

Camp Kapanaia
Really great private spot. Beautiful location and conveniently close to town but rural.
Use the directions provided by the previous camper. They work great.
Host was available and responsive.

Camp Kapanaia
Open field area to camp. Lots of room. Nice view of the ocean. Would be nice if they had a fire pit area as they allow fires but no where to really have one.

Challenging, but beautiful & cheap
You’ll have a beautiful flat pasture with ocean views, gentle wave sounds, and a sunrise to wake up to. But you have to be country-savvy, have a 4WD and be comfortable camping with no facilities and horses in your midst.
Bring water and know that there are no facilities. We don’t recommend a fire—the grass is very dry; you don’t want to burn down Kohala-town.
Since the host is pretty unresponsive we have posted driving directions as the listing has none and Google maps is incorrect (but accurately pins the final location.) On HWY 270, going east from Hawi to Halaula; Turn left at the yellow sign that says “One Lane Bridge” BEFORE the bridge, and then turn left again at the bottom of the short road (there are three private property here with locked gates) into a deeply excavated roadway. At the end of this road you’ll see yellow metal gates—turn on the road that goes right. Keep going on this narrow road until you see the cemetery on the left. Just beyond that you’ll see the gate on the left. Use the code the owner provides on the large padlock. Once through that gate, go down the road until the next gate into the horse pasture.
Don’t let the horses out! They are very friendly and will go through your stuff. Pick up a branch and lightly tap them on the ass, yelling “yeehaw” when they get overbearing.
It’s a challenge, but beautiful and cheap.
